Wire-To-Wire Win for Long Beach State in Triton Invitational Opener

LA JOLLA, Calif.— No. 7 Long Beach State got out to an early lead and never looked back as they defeated Loyola Marymount 16-7 in their first game of the Triton Invitational.
The Beach got off to a quick start behind goals from Jamie Oberman, Lara Luka, and Rachael Kowalchick, giving them a 4-0 lead and forcing an LMU timeout. Elisa Portillo and Anne de Kleer also scored to give Long Beach State a 6-1 lead after one quarter.
The first quarter set the tone for the rest of the game, as Long Beach State led the rest of the way. After three quarters, LMU closed the gap to an 11-7 lead for the Beach, but Long Beach State held them scoreless during the fourth quarter. Luka and senior Gabriella Matafora-Adams each scored a pair of goals in the final quarter to help seal the victory for the Beach.
Matafora-Adams and Luka each finished with four goals, and Oberman, de Kleer, and Portillo added two goals each.
This win puts No. 7 Long Beach State at 4-1 on the season. Their next match will be Saturday at 11:10 a.m. against No. 9 UC Irvine.
