Long Beach State will now face No. 1 Stanford on Saturday
IRVINE, Calif.-- In a tough matchup against No. 9 Michigan, seven players found the back of the cage to secure the 10-9 victory for Long Beach State. Rachael Kowalchick, Lara Luka, and Jamie Oberman led the way for the Beach with two goals each.
Long Beach State came out firing early as they jumped out to an early 4-1 lead behind goals from Kowalchick, Luka, and Emmie Muschek, but Michigan stormed back with three goals just before halftime to even the score at four goals each.
The second half was a test of will, as the two teams traded goals throughout the third and fourth quarters. Jamie Oberman started the second half with the first of her two goals within the first minute of play, and Martina Cardona also added a goal to give the Beach an 7-6 lead after three quarters.
The fourth quarter started as a defensive battle as neither team found the back of the cage after the first three minutes of play. Michigan would score first to even the score at 7-7, and later even the score at 8-8 after a Lara Luka goal gave the Beach the lead. However, late goals from Elisa Portillo and Gabriella Matafora-Adams would secure the victory for Long Beach State as they walked away with a 10-9 victory after a gutsy performance.
Chelsea Oliver set a season high with 14 saves to lead the defensive effort for the Beach on the day. On the offensive side, seven of the ten goals scored came from assists. Portillo led the Beach with three assists, while Cardona had two, and Matafora-Adams and Oberman each had one.
The win improves the Beach to 9-2 on the season. Their next match will be against No. 1 Stanford on Saturday at 8 a.m.
