A second-half rally came up short against the Highlanders in Riverside.
RIVERSIDE, Calif. – After a slow start that saw Long Beach State trail by as many as 17 in the second half, the Beach rallied to cut the lead to three points in the final five minutes, but UC Riverside pulled away one final time for an 88-76 win on Wednesday night.
Long Beach State (15-12, 9-6 Big West) went inside for a quick Lassina Traore basket to take a 2-1 lead in the opening minutes, but that would be the last lead for the Beach as UC Riverside (17-10, 10-5 Big West) raced out to an 11-4 lead and ultimately controlled most of the first half. The Highlanders forced the Beach into 12 turnovers and Flynn Cameron had 11 points, four assists and two steals in the first half to lead UCR.
Two threes and a four-point play from Cameron pushed the lead out to 16 points in the first 90 seconds of the second half, but the Beach would battle back. Recovering defensively and getting a lift from Marcus Tsohonis, who had 17 of his game-high 26 points in the second half, Long Beach State chipped away at the lead. First, Long Beach State pulled to within 10 at 51-62 on a Tsohonis jumper, and then finally pulled back to one possession on a transition 3-pointer from Tone Hunter at 71-68 with just over four minutes to play.
The Highlanders were able to answer with a 3-pointer of their own, pushing the lead back up to six, and the Beach was forced to the chase the game the rest of the way and UC Riverside took the win. UC Riverside had 17 offensive rebounds that led to 19 second-chance points, and became just the second team in league play this season to out-rebound Long Beach State.
Tshohonis led the way offensively for Long Beach State with 26 points. Aboubacar Traore added nine points with a team-high seven rebounds, while Lassina Traore was the team's other scorer in double-figures with 15 points and six rebounds. Cameron finished 7-for-10 from three for the Highlanders and led UC Riverside with 24 points.
Long Beach State is back in the Walter Pyramid this Saturday, hosting Hawai'i at 4 p.m. with live coverage provided by ESPN+.
