Long Beach State Loses Wild Back And Forth Game With Kansas To Close Arizona Candrea Invitational

2/11/2023 12:18:00 PM | Softball

The lead swung back and forth but Kansas as the home team got the last laugh in the bottom of the seventh.

TUCSON, Ariz. – Cassie Camou hit the second of two go-head home runs for Long Beach State in the top of the seventh inning for Long Beach State, but Kansas as the designated home team pushed two across in the bottom of the seventh to steal the win in a back-and-forth contest to close the team's time in Tucson.

Kansas (2-2) struck first in the bottom of the first inning, as Shayna Espy led off the inning with a single, and Lyric Moore hit the first of her two home runs to put the Jayhawks in front.

Long Beach State (2-3) quickly answered to get their first lead of the day. Back-to-back walks to Jacquelyn Bickar and Sinclair Lawhorn put two on, and then with the bases loaded, an error brought in the first run of the game for the Beach. Carly Robbins singled home another run, and a bases-loaded walk drawn by Teah Thies put the Beach in front 3-2.

The Jayhawks tied the game in the bottom of the third inning, but the Beach quickly answered in the top of the fourth.

Olson led off the inning with a single, followed by a double from Carly Robbins and a walk to load the bases. Olson was able to race home in front of the throw on a groundout, and an error plated a fifth run as the Beach took a 5-3 lead.

The pattern of the game continued as Kansas scored three runs in the bottom half of the fourth inning to take a 6-5 lead, begging for another Long Beach State answer. That came from freshman Makayla Medellin, who hit a two-run opposite field home run with Corissa Sweet on base to take back the lead at 7-6.

Moore's second home run for the Jayhawks tied the game in the bottom of the sixth, and a solo home run from Cassie Camou put the Beach back on top once more at 8-7. Kansas would get the last opportunity though as the home team, and took advantage of the chance with two runs in the bottom of the inning to walk off the game 8-7.

Long Beach State will return home next week and the Beach hosts their home opener and first game under the brand-new lights at the LBSU Softball Complex. The Beach hosts San Diego for a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, February 15.
