LBSU Softball Splits Home Doubleheader with San Diego

2/15/2023 8:36:00 PM | Softball

The Beach took game one, but their rally in game two came up short.

LONG BEACH, Calif. – In their first afternoon doubleheader under the lights, Long Beach State split a pair of one-run games with the University of San Diego on Wednesday. The Beach (3-4) won game one, 1-0, before falling short to the Toreros (1-6) in game two, 3-2.

Shannon Haddad (2-0) got the start in the circle for the first action of the day and worked through a lot of foot traffic for a complete game shutout. In her seven scoreless innings, she scattered nine hits and four walks while striking out four. The Toreros got a baserunner against her in every inning, but every time she worked out of the jam to go the distance on just over 100 pitches.

Offensively, the Beach totaled six hits led by multi-hit efforts from Sara Olson and Cassie Camou. Makayla Medellin and Teah Thies each record hits in the victory as well.

Thies had arguably the biggest hit of the night a leadoff triple to left field to leadoff the bottom half of the fourth. The senior transfer would then come around to score on Camou's RBI single in the next at bat.

San Diego threatened in the top half of the seventh with back-to-back bunt singles, but a grounder to Selena Lopez led to a double play before a strikeout ended the ballgame with the tying run stranded on third.

Samantha Fowler was handed the ball in game two and put together five innings allowing three runs (one earned) while striking out three Toreros, but errors plagued the Beach defense while she was in the circle.

After striking out the first two hitters of the game, an error on a groundball to short followed by a two-out double to center field put the Toreros out in front early. Two innings later, a dropped fly ball in the outfield would lead to a second Torero run giving them a 2-0 lead through three.

The third and final run for the visiting team came in the fifth on a solo EJ Joyner home run to left-center.

The Beach offense struggled through the first four innings recording just two hits and a walk. However, that changed in the fifth as they kickstarted their rally back.

A one-out hit by pitch on Savannah Magadan came around to score on Jacquelyn Bickar RBI double down the left field line to break the shutout. After a groundout and a walk, Olson came through with a double of her own into the left field corner cutting the deficit to just one run.

Unfortunately, that would be where the rally stopped as a groundout ended the bottom of the fifth and Long Beach State only managed one hit in each of the sixth and seventh innings.

Eryka Gonzales was great out of the bullpen for the Beach. The sophomore took over after Fowler faced just one batter in the top of the sixth, and went on to throw a near perfect pair of innings issuing just one walk in the outing.

Olson finished the day as the offensive star, going 4-for-6 at the plate across the two games bumping her average up to .375 in the early going.

The Beach returns to action this weekend as they continue their five-game homestand hosting the Wilson Invitational. They are set to play California twice and close out the tournament with Louisiana-Monroe on Sunday.
