
Sydney Woodley’s Double-Double Lifts Long Beach Over CSUN

Four Long Beach State players score in double-figures as the Beach earns their first Big West win of the season
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – Sydney Woodley recorded a double-double leading four Beach players in double-figures as Long Beach State used a strong second half to defeat CSUN, 76-58, on Saturday at Premier America Credit Union Arena in Northridge.
The win for the Beach (6-6, 1-1 Big West) marked their first conference win and the first Big West victory of first year head coach Amy Wright's career. Meanwhile, the Matadors drop to 2-10 on the year, and 1-1 in Big West action, as their losing streak extends to 10.
LBSU shot 36.9 (24-65) percent from the field in the game, while draining eight from behind the arc. The Beach held the advantage over the Matadors in rebounds (44-41) and steals (18-10), while forcing CSUN into 30 turnovers.
Woodley had a solid outing as she finished the day with 12 points and 10 rebounds, to go along with five steals, three assists, and one block.
Cheyenne Givens led all scorers with 19 points, while Casey Valenti Paea contributed 14 points, and Savannah Tucker added 13.
The Beach got off to a strong start knocking down three-straight threes to take a quick 9-0 lead over the Matadors. Long Beach State doubled up CSUN, 18-9, by 2:14 after scoring six-consecutive points before taking a 20-13 lead into the second quarter.
Long Beach State's offensive attack suddenly went cold in the second quarter as the Beach were held scoreless until 3:56 on the clock when Givens hit a triple to give LBSU a 23-19 edge over the Matadors. However, CSUN would chip away and tie the score at 23-all at 2:30, before taking a 26-25 lead over Long Beach at halftime.
After being held to just five points in the second quarter and a shooting percentage of 6.7 (1-15), the Beach came back out in the second half reinvigorated. Long Beach State shot 52.6 from the field as the Beach sank 10 field goals in the frame as they outscored CSUN 29-16 on their way to regaining the lead and taking a 54-42 lead into the final quarter.
In the fourth quarter, Long Beach added to its lead going on a 10-0 run jumping in front of CSUN by double digits. The Beach led the Matadors by as many as 20 (73-73) in the frame and finished the contest with an 18-point (76-58) victory.
Kayanna Spriggs led CSUN with 18 points, eight rebounds, and four steals. Meanwhile Laney Amundsen and Erica Adams each tallied 14 points in the game. Adams added four assists, while Talo Li-Uperesa put up four blocks.
Long Beach State will be back in action on Thursday, Jan. 4 when the Beach host Cal Poly at the Walter Pyramid at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
