Four Long Beach State Athletes Honored As Big West Awards Announced

Three players were named to All-First Team and two to All-Freshman Team.
LONG BEACH, Calif.— The Big West Conference announced the 2023 men's water polo all-conference teams on Friday, and four Long Beach State athletes earned selections. Robert Lopez Duart was named the Freshman of the Year, as well as being named to the All-Big West First Team and All-Freshman Team. Evan Cain and Bruno Chiappini also earned All-Big West First Team honors while Marc Frigola was named to the All-Freshman team in addition to Lopez Duart.
Lopez Duart had an historic debut season with Long Beach State. He broke the single-season points scored in program history with 117 as he finished with 87 goals and 30 assists. His 87 goals were second most in a single Long Beach State season, and his eight-goal performance against Stanford ties the record for the most goals in a game. Lopez Duart led the Big West in goals and points scored and steals (52) this season.
Junior Evan Cain continued his stellar Long Beach State career with his best season yet. Cain finished second on the team and fourth in the Big West with 60 goals. Cain Also recorded 21 assists, finishing with 81 points this season. A solid two-way player, Cain also had 28 steals and 11 field blocks this season.
Bruno Chiappini was named the All-Big West first season after playing a crucial role for Long Beach State in his sophomore season. The Brazilian national finished with 47 goals and 25 assists this year. He finished in the top-ten in the Big West in points scored with 72, as well as in the goals per game (1.7) and points per game (2.6).
Marc Frigola also had an outstanding debut season with Long Beach State, earning All-Freshman team honors. The Barcelona, Spain native finished the season with 35 goals and 28 assists for 63 total points. Frigola ranked in the top-five in assists during conference play with eight in five games. He also won nine his 13 sprint attempts this season.
