The Beach had four players in double-figures on the road against last year’s national runners-up.
SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Long Beach State pulled to within three points on two occasions in the second half, but foul trouble and a final Aztec run kept San Diego State in front as the Beach fell 88-76 on the road Tuesday night.
Long Beach State (1-2) had a strong offensive night, shooting 50% from the field with four players scoring in double-figures, but San Diego State (2-1) had a 34-24 edge on the boards and got 27 points from Jaedon LeDee to hold off the Beach.
San Diego State pushed out to an 11-3 lead in the opening minutes and led by as many as 15 in the first half, but Long Beach State bounced back with plenty of their own fight, cutting the lead back to five points at 30-25 with a Marcus Tsohonis 3-pointer.
Down eight points at the half, 47-39, Long Beach State continued to battle back and cut the lead to three points for the first time at 54-51. Minutes later, a Tsohonis bucket cut the lead to 58-55 with just over 12 minutes to play.
San Diego State answered with an 8-2 run to rebuild their cushion, and both Lassina Traore and Jadon Jones would foul out to hamper the chance for a late Long Beach State comeback.
Junior Aboubacar Traore continues to come close to grabbing the program's second triple-double, scoring 14 points while adding 8 assists and 6 rebounds, leading LBSU in the latter two categories. Tsohonis was the top scorer on the night with 17 points, while sophomore AJ George added 15 points off of the bench.
The road will remain tough for Long Beach State, who will play on the road at Michigan for the first time in program history. The Beach will take on the Wolverines on Friday, November 17 at 4 p.m. PT with live coverage on B1G+.
