Women’s Golf In First Place With Record-Setting Round At Golf Iconic Classic

The Beach leads the 16-team field after the first of three rounds at New Mexico State.
LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Long Beach State is in first place after 18 holes at the Golf Iconic Classic, hosted by New Mexico State at the NMSU Golf Course, leading 15 other programs after the first of three rounds on Monday after a single-round record setting score of 278, 10-under par.
After the opening round of action on Monday, Long Beach State holds a three-stroke lead over Nevada and a five stroke lead in front of Boise State in the top three, with the Beach shooting 10-under par as a team. In addition to the top three, the Beach started the tournament in front of Big West rival UC Davis, tied for fourth, as well as last year's champions and hosts New Mexico State.
The 278 breaks the program single-round record of 279, set last season at The Clash at Boulder Creek and is a new low round score of -10 to par as well.
Sophomore Janae Leovao continued her spectacular play to lead from the front on Monday, finishing the day with eight birdies and carding a five-under par 67, her second straight 67 dating back to the final round of the Ptarmigan Ram Classic. Leovao was two strokes behind the tournament leader, Leah John, in second place overall among the 92-golfer field from New Mexico.
All four counting scores came in under par on the day however. Jasmine Leovao and Madison Le each had four birdies on Monday to both finish in a tie for 8th place with scores of 70 in similar days, while freshman Andee Avery recorded a one-under par 71 to also finish in the Top 15 after the first 18 holes.
Senior Angelina Kim shot a 76, while freshman Erin Lee finished her first collegiate round with a 79, making her Long Beach State debut as an individual at New Mexico State.
