The Rob Murray Era of Long Beach State Men’s Golf Begins at the Arizona Thunderbirds Intercollegiate

The Beach will compete against some of the top schools in the country to open the spring season
LONG BEACH, Calif. – After turning in a solid fall season, the Long Beach State Men's Golf team is heading into the spring season with a new Head Coach in Rob Murray, who took over the program in November. The Beach look to continue to build on their fall success at the Arizona Thunderbirds Intercollegiate which takes place on Monday, Jan. 30 and Tuesday, Jan. 31 at the Tucson Country Club.
The Beach are one of 15 competitive programs that will hit the green on Monday. In addition to LBSU and host, Arizona, the Thunderbirds Intercollegiate will also feature BYU, Cal, Cal Poly, Central Michigan, Iowa State, New Mexico, New Mexico State, Seattle U, St. Mary's, SMU, Santa Clara, Texas A&M, and West Virginia.
The starting lineup of Ian Gilligan, Jack Cantlay, Ivan Barahona, Isaac Rodea, and Krishnav Nikhol Chopraa will represent Long Beach State at the Arizona Thunderbirds Intercollegiate. The quintet all saw action during the fall season as the led the Beach to a tournament win at the Nick Watney Invitational, as well as two Top 5 finishes, and a Top 10 showing.
Gilligan, a sophomore from Reno, Nev., led the Beach in the fall with a pair of tournament wins as he breezed through the Nick Watney Invitational and the Mackenzie, hosted by Fresno State and Cal, respectively. Gilligan shot a 14-under par to tie for first at the Nick Watney Invitational, then fired a 15-under par to claim first place outright at the Mackenzie.
Cantlay saw action in three of the four fall tournaments with his best showing coming at the Cal Poly Invitational where he shot a 4-over par. The freshman from Los Alamitos, Calif., is looking to continue to improve in the spring season as he earned the No. 2 spot in the lineup heading into the Arizona Thunderbirds Intercollegiate.
Barahona is a freshman from Van Nuys, Calif., who only played in one of the fall tournaments. He posted a 1-over par at the Cal Poly Invitational and was Long Beach State's second finisher as he posted a Top 25 showing.
Rodea, a senior from San Diego, Calif., brings experience to the Long Beach State starting lineup. In addition to playing all four years at the Beach, Rodea also turned in a solid fall season as he played in three of the four tournaments. He kicked off the fall season with a Top 10, 1-over par performance as LBSU's top finisher at the Husky Invitational. From there, he recorded his best fall showing with a Top 5 finish as he shot 10-under at the Nick Watney Invitational.
Rounding out the LBSU starting lineup is Nikhil Chopraa, a freshman from New Delhi, India. In the fall, he played in two tournaments with his best showing coming at the Nick Watney Invitational. Nikhil Chopraa's collegiate debut saw him shoot 2-under par as he came in tied for 16th place, while competing as an individual.
