CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The women's soccer team suffered a tough loss in their first road match of the season, falling 2-0 at No. 20 Harvard. It moves them to 1-3-3 on the season with one more contest in the non-conference portion of their schedule.
Harvard got things going early with Hannah Bebar netting her first of two goals on the night in the eighth minute. The pressure continued throughout the first as the Crimson totaled 11 shots forcing Morgan Houston-Shepherd to make five saves in the first half.
Not much happened in the first half for the Beach as they could not get a shot off through the first 45 minutes.
However, the momentum seemed to shift for LBSU as Lena Silano launched two shots on goal within the first three minutes of the second half. Unfortunately, the Crimson goalkeeper saved both.
Arguably the best offensive chance of the night for Long Beach came in the 80th minute after Aimee Medwin dribbled down field and sent a pass to Elysia Laramie in the corner. With plenty of space, she sent a cross into the box intended for Lena Silano. The Big West scoring leader had a great look to tie the game, but was knocked down from behind with no foul called giving Harvard the possession.
Bebar would then score her second goal of the night in the 82nd to make it a 2-0 ballgame and give the Beach their third loss of the season as they held on for the final eight minutes.
Houston-Shepherd totaled nine saves on the night, a new season-high while three players combined for four shots on the offensive side.
Long Beach State will have the weekend off and end their non-conference schedule next Thursday against No. 10 Pepperdine at George Allen Field.
