Long Beach State rallied from four goals behind for an exciting comeback win over No. 8 UC Santa Barbara.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State picked up a pair of wins on Sunday to close the Triton Invitational, rallying for a thrilling overtime win over No. 8 UC Santa Barbara before riding that momentum into a 12-6 win over No. 12 UC Irvine.
No. 5 Long Beach State (3-1) got off to a slow start against No. 8 UC Santa Barbara (2-2) but recovered well. The Gauchos opened up a 4-1 lead in the first quarter, but Garrett Zaan scored the first of his four goals in the match in the dying seconds of the first quarter to cut into the lead.
UCSB still lead by four goals in the second at 7-3, but the Beach refused to give in. Drawing a penalty, the Beach converted to pull within two, and Bruno Chiappini scored with the final possession of the half for Long Beach State to chip into the lead once more.
Riding that momentum, the Beach scored the next two goals to tie the game at 7-7, and then took their first lead of the match at 9-8 on another Zaan goal. UC Santa Barbara pulled in front one more at 10-9, but Chiappini scored with 16 seconds remaining to force overtime.
Raul Morales scored to put the Beach in front at 11-10 in the first OT period. In the second, Zaan scored an even strength goal to give LBSU its largest lead of the game as well netting what would be the game-winner, as the Gauchos could not close the game in an 12-11 win for the Beach.
Long Beach State kept the momentum going in a convincing win over No. 12 UC Irvine (2-2) to close out the Triton Invitational. Long Beach State never trailed against the Anteaters, as the Beach picked up early goals from Connor Mannion and Rafael Real Vergara in the first quarter.
With Long Beach State leading 5-4 at halftime, Mannion picked up his third goal of the game to push the edge back to two at 6-4. The Beach then outscored the Anteaters 5-1 in the final quarter with Mannion picking up his fourth goal of the game in the final seconds to seal the win as the sophomore scored in all four corners against UCI.
Next up, Long Beach State gets a pair of road rests, facing No. 2 USC on Thursday, September 7 before taking on No. 3 UCLA on Friday, September 9. The Beach then hosts their annual alumni match on Saturday at 3 p.m. at the Ken Lindgren Aquatics Center.
