Long Beach State scored five straight in the fourth quarter to take the lead, but came up just short.
LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Down 8-4 to start the fourth quarter, Long Beach State roared back on the road against USC, scoring five straight goals to take the lead, but the Trojans were able to answer back and pulled away in the overtime periods in a 14-10 defeat for LBSU.
No. 7 Long Beach State (3-2) got off to a strong start defensively, as Andrej Bosanac and the Beach held the Trojans to just a pair of goals in the first quarter, and trailed 2-1 after Evan Cain scored in the first. USC (4-1) and the Beach traded goals to start the second quarter, and while the Trojans pushed to a 5-2 lead, Matt Morris' goal in the final minute kept the Beach within two at halftime.
Down 8-4 after the third quarter, Long Beach State's comeback began. Cain got the action started with a goal on the first possession of the quarter, and Garrett Zaan scored inside to cut the lead back to two. The Beach earned a penalty that was buried by Rafael Real Vergara to cut the edge to 8-7, and then the Beach found Zaan inside again, as the senior fought off a mob to even the score at 8-8.
Another penalty led to a clutch Vergara goal, giving Long Beach State its first lead of the contest with just 2:35 remaining. Massimo di Martire was able to equalize for USC, and the teams headed to overtime for the first time since 2001.
USC scored the first two goals to open an 11-9 lead, and while Zaan's third goal of the game cut the lead to 11-10, a penalty and an empty netter stretched the lead for USC after the side switch to 14-10.
Long Beach State's busy week continues with another Top 10 matchup, as the Beach faces off against No. 2 UCLA on the road. That match is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. from Westwood.
