No. 7 Long Beach State scored the final six goals against the Aggies to rally for the win.
STANFORD, Calif. – Moving into the winner's side of the bracket at the MPSF Invite on Saturday, No. 7 Long Beach State nearly pulled off the upset against No. 2 UCLA 7-6 before rallying from behind to defeat No. 6 UC Davis 11-8 in overtime.
Long Beach State (10-4) gave No. 2 UCLA (12-0) all they could handle in a defensive battle in the opening game of the day. Rafael Real Vergara got the Beach started by burying a penalty shot in the first quarter, one that would stand as the only goal of the first eight minutes.
The Beach led 2-1 at halftime, but UCLA scored four goals in the third quarter to pull out in front by a pair at 5-3. Throughout the fourth quarter, Long Beach State would pull within one, but couldn't draw square, ultimately falling 7-6 despite three goals from Rafael Real Vergara.
In a rematch against UC Davis (7-4), junior goaltender Andrej Bosanac had one of his best performances of the season to help spur the comeback. Bosanac finished with 12 saves and made seven in the first half as Long Beach State and the Aggies were square through the first half, tied at four.
The Aggies grabbed the momentum with a big third quarter. Tied at 5-5, UC Davis scored the final three goals of the period, including sneaking one just inside the buzzer with two seconds left from Connor Norton to take an 8-5 lead.
That would be the last goal UC Davis scored however, as the Beach came roaring back. Goals from Aleksandar Timotijevic and Garrett Zaan got the Beach within one, and then Matt Morris buried a power play goal to even the score at 8-8 with 2:27 remaining.
That score held into overtime, where the Beach kept their momentum going. Bruno Chiappini put the Beach in front for the good with his first goal, and then Zaan scored his fourth to put Long Beach State on top by two after the first overtime, and then in the second, Aaron Arias slammed the door to give the Beach an 11-8 win.
Long Beach State will play in the fifth-place game Sunday to close out the MPSF invite, facing No. 5 Pacific at 10 a.m. from Stanford. Live streaming is available at https://pac-12.com/live/stanford-university while live stats can be found at https://scores.6-8sports.com/.
