No. 7 Men’s Water Polo Takes Winning Streak To MPSF Invite

Long Beach State has won five straight but will face a strong challenge at the MPSF Invite.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Winners of five straight, No. 7 Long Beach State will try to keep that momentum going into this weekend's MPSF Invite in Palo Alto, Calif., as the top teams in the nation descend on Stanford for the major tournament of the weekend.
Senior Rafael Real Vergara is once again leading the team in scoring after putting home nine last week in wins over No. 13 UC San Diego and No. 8 UC Santa Barbara, and has 19 goals on the year, leading a balanced group that has seen nine players score 10 or more goals through 11 games this season.
The MPSF Invite comprises 16 teams, featuring 14 of the nation's Top 20 as well as the No. 1 Division III team, Pomona-Pitzer. Long Beach State's seeding matches their ranking as top 11 teams in the country will battle it out over four games.
Long Beach State (8-3) will kick off the action on Friday, September 23 at 3:20 p.m. when the Beach takes on No. 9 San Jose State in a non-conference matchup for the first meeting with the Spartans this season. San Jose State enters the MPSF Invite with a record of 4-4, with their best win of the year coming against California Baptist at the Aggie Roundup.
Two more games follow on Saturday, September 24 followed by a placing contest on Sunday, September 25 as the teams move through the draw. No. 3 Stanford is host of the tournament this season, and will have two pools. Action at the Avery Stadium, Stanford's main pool, will feature live streaming for all games in that venue while live stats will be available for all games via 6-8 sports regardless of location.
