Rafael Real Vergara scored five goals to lead Long Beach State to the win.

STANFORD, Calif. – Long Beach State got off to a strong start at the MPSF Invite Friday, controlling the action late to hold off their Golden Coast Conference rivals, San Jose State, in a 12-9 win.

No. 7 Long Beach State (9-3) actually slipped behind early, but rallied behind goals from Matt Morris, Bruno Chiappini and Garrett Zaan to take a 3-2 lead after the first quarter. No. 9 San Jose State bounded back to even the score at 3-3, but the Beach held onto a 6-5 edge over the Spartans at the half.

In the third, Long Beach state would stretch their lead to as many as three goals, the latst coming at 9-6 with just over two minutes remaining, but San Jose State picked up a goal on the advantage from Niels Hofmeijer to stay within reach.

Nervous moments came in the fourth quarter as the Spartans would twice pull back the Long Beach State lead to one goal, but a critical save from Andrej Bosanac with just over a minute remaining followed by a powerplay goal from Rafael Real Vergara left LBSU in charge in the closing minute. Morris then slammed the door shut with his third goal of the day for the 12-9 win.

With the victory, Long Beach State advances in the winner's bracket and will spend the rest of the tournament at the Avery Stadium on the Stanford campus. All games at that location are being streamed live at https://pac-12.com/live/stanford-university and will continue to have live stats at https://scores.6-8sports.com/.

The Beach will face No. 2 UCLA in the second meeting between the teams to start off the day, as the Bruins take on LBSU at 10:30 a.m. tomorrow. Regardless of that result, the Beach will have a second game Saturday in the evening as well with the opponent determined by results in the morning.
