ABOUT LAST WEEK
• Long Beach State closed out their non-conference schedule and opened Big West play for their two games last week, suffering a 2-0 loss against No. 9 Pepperdine on Thursday and then settling for a 2-2 draw with UC Riverside on Sunday.
• Against the ninth-ranked Waves, Pepperdine scored twice in the first half and held on for the 2-0 victory. The Beach registered nine shots led by three from Lena Silano and two from both Aimee Medwin and Sophie Jones.
• The conference opener against UCR saw the Beach lead for 86 minutes before a late Highlander goal tied it up 2-2. Lena Silano recorded her second brace of the season and missed a hat trick by mere inches. Sophie Jones barely missed the game-winner in the 87th minute, but it hit crossbar and bounced out.
CONFERENCE AND NATIONAL STAT RANKINGS
• The Beach is still in the Big West top three for goals, assists, and total points. Their 13 assists on the season currently ranks 83rd in the nation with a 1.44 assists per game that ranks 97th. They also rank second in the conference for total shots and shots on goal.
• Individually, Lena Silano leads the Big West in goals while ranking second in total points, shots and shots on goal. Nationally, she is 10th with seven goals, 15th with 0.78 goals per game, 24th 15 points, 29th with 1.67 points per game, and 33rd with 3.78 shots per game.
CONFERENCE PLAY IS HERE
• The Beach officially opened up their Big West schedule last weekend, hosting UC Riverside on Sunday night. They would settle for a 2-2 draw with Highlanders to notch their first point in the standings.
• Since 1998 when the program restarted, they are now 13-7-4 in conference openers and 7-4-3 when playing at home. They are unbeaten in their last seven matches, going 4-0-3 since the 2015 season.
SCHEDULING TOUGH
• Head Coach Mauricio Ingrassia is known for setting up a high quality schedule against some of the best teams in the country. That is no different for 2022 as WoSoIndependent.com had Long Beach State with a top ten toughest schedule in the nation prior to the season.
• The Beach have already faced three ranked teams with USC, Harvard, and then Pepperdine last week. While they were not ranked when the Beach faced them, week two opponent Washington has also entered the Top 25.
THE SILANO SHOW
• Lena Silano has continued to lead the Beach to start the 2022 season. Through nine matches, she owns seven goals and 15 points to lead the team and rank among the tops in the conference.
• The senior has notched at least one point in six of the nine matches this year and her stretch of four consecutive from Aug. 25 to Sep. 4 was the longest streak of her career surpassing her three-match streak from Oct. 14-21 last season.
• She is currently the active Big West career leader in points, goals, goals per game, and shots.
RECORD BOOK WATCHING
• Lena Silano made history last year entering the Long Beach State single-season top ten in shots, points, goals, and game-winning goals. She is on pace to enter those rankings again while also entering the best for career stats.
• Here is where the senior sits on the career Long Beach State leaderboards:
- 5th, Game-Winning Goals (7) => 4th, Hayley Bolt (11)
- 7th, Total Shots (128) => 6th, Mimi Rangel (140)
- 8th, Goals Scored (18) => 7th, Lindsay Bullock (26)
- Total Points (41) => 10th, Allison Wiegand (46)
ACE'S RETURN
• Elysia Laramie was a 2019 All-Big West First Team selection and the leading scorer for the Beach that season. Unfortunately, an injury and COVID kept her off the field in both 2020 and 2021, but she has slotted into the backline like she never left this season.
• This year, she has played all but five minutes through nine matches and has spent time both up front and at center back. She currently has five shots on the year and registered an assist.
A SUMMER BRACE
• Sophomore Summer Laskey has been a spark plug off the bench to open Long Beach State's season bringing fast-paced, high energy onto the pitch when she enters. A key contributor in that role, she is second on the team with three goals to go along with two assists for eight points in nine games.
• In the thumping of Fresno State, she registered her first multi-goal performance with a pair of first half goals to give the Beach a 3-0 lead heading into halftime. It was also the first brace of the season for the team.
YBARRA DISHES
• Redshirt freshman Sara Ybarra unfortunately missed her true freshman season due to injury, but has found herself in the Beach midfield every game this year. In the team's 4-0 win against Fresno, she recorded her first career points with a pair of assists.
• It is the first multi-assist effort for the Beach since the season opener against CSUN last year. Prior to that, it hadn't happened since Oct. 24, 2019.
GET EVERYONE INVOLVED
• Last year, the Beach totaled 58 points (goals+assists) on the season and had just 10 different student-athletes record at least one point. This year, they have already matched the player total with eight of the 10 registering multiple points.
• Lena Silano leads the way with 15 on the season followed by Summer Laskey's eight. The freshmen duo of Felicia Jastre Hogberg and Cherrie Cox are tied for third most with three each.
SCOUTING THE 'RUNNERS
• CSU Bakersfield currently sits in second place of the Big West standings with a 1-0 record in conference play and a 3-5-1 mark overall. They went unbeaten last week with a 3-1 over CSUN and a 2-2 non-conference draw with Sacramento State.
• As a team, they are being outscored 22-13 for the year and own a .366 SOG percentage thus far while facing a .504 SOG percentage. Regielly Halldorsdottir leads the 'Runners with three goals and seven total points, but they have four players that own multiple goals this season. In goal, their keepers have totaled 42 saves, 37 of which belong to Holle Hercik. She also sports a .685 save percentage.
• In the two programs' histories, Long Beach State owns the all-time record 3-1-1 and are unbeaten in the last four meetings. Last year was a 1-0 double overtime victory for the Beach in Bakersfield.
