The Beach will compete at the Husky Invitational on September 19-20 in Bremerton, Wash.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – The Long Beach State Men's Golf team hits the road to open the 2022-23 fall season at the Husky Invitational. Hosted by the University of Washington, the three-round tournament will take place over two days, Monday, Sept. 19 and Tuesday, Sept. 20 at the Gold Mountain Golf Course.
The Beach are coming off a solid 2021-22 season in which they finished runner-up at The Big West Conference Championships. This season, Long Beach State looks to build on their success as they return seven players from a year ago, including reigning Big West Freshman of the Year Ian Gilligan and 2022 Big West All-Second Team selection Isaac Rodea.
Joining Gilligan and Rodea are four incoming freshman in Ivan Barahona, Jack Cantlay, Krishnav Chopraa, and Jaden Huggins.
At the Husky Invitational, the Beach will send their starting lineup of Huggins, Cantlay, Deutsch, Rodea, and Vallejo to the green. Additionally, senior Bryce Kvick will tee off as an individual.
LBSU's Huggins is freshman who comes to Long Beach State after having prepped at Vista Murrieta High School where he helped his team secure a first-place finish at the CIF Southern Sectional in his junior season.
Another new face to the Beach is freshman Cantlay who is from Los Alamitos and played at Servite High School. There he earned First-Team All-League honors and was the league MVP in his senior year. He also led his team to a SCGA CIF Championship.
Returning to Long Beach for his sophomore season is Deutsch who participated in seven tournaments last year and finished his rookie season with a stroke average of 74.43.
Teeing off in the fourth spot for the Beach is Rodea a two-time Big West Conference Second Team honoree. Rodea had a solid junior campaign in which he posted a 73.74 stroke average to rank third on the squad. Last year, he picked up his first-ever tournament victory as he placed first at the Cowboy Classic.
Rounding out the LBSU starting five is Vallejo, who is a redshirt sophomore. He redshirted in 2020-21, then saw action in just one fall tournament in 2021-22 where he shot a low round score of 75 at the Paintbrush Invitational.
Competing as an individual Kvick, a senior, who saw action in six tournaments for the Beach last spring. His best showing came at The Prestige where he was a Top 25 finisher.
The 15-team tournament consists of Boise State, Colgate, Duke, Long Beach State, Nevada, Oregon, Oregon State, San Jose State, Seattle, St. Mary's, UC Davis, Utah, USC, Washington State, and host, Washington.
