Long Beach State Leads ASU Thunderbird Collegiate After Two Rounds

As a team, the Beach had five eagles and are -27 after the first day.
PHOENIX, Ariz. – All six golfers including individual Norwin Gohm did not shoot over par after the first two rounds at the ASU Thunderbird Collegiate, taking a three-stroke lead after the first day with a score of -27.
Day One Results
Combined, Long Beach State hit five eagles across the two rounds, and four players are in the Top 5 of the tournament from Papago Golf Course in Phoenix. Alejandro de Castro Piera used a second-round 64 to vault into second place at 8-under, while Steen Zeman, Krishnav Chopraa and Norwin Gohm as an indy are all one stroke behind the senior at 7-under.
Zeman and Jaden Huggins both started the day with a four-under par 67, as Zeman had a pair of eagles on 12 and 15, while Huggins finished with six birdies and one of just three total double-bogeys on the day to tie for the lead. Krishnav Chopraa had a 68 to start the day, and de Castro shot 70 in the first round with another eagle on 9. Gohm shot a 69 and Jack Cantlay had the only round not under par as the drop score, highlighting the strength and depth from the team on Friday, with an even par 71.
Long Beach State was even better in the second round. Five birdies in the first nine holes followed by an eagle on one for de Castro pushed the senior into second place in the 60-golfer field, while Gohm improved on his first round 69 with a career-low 66 in the second round. Chopraa joined de Castro in a bogey-free round, shooting a four-under 67 while Zeman was one stroke back with a 68. Huggins and Cantlay both shot 70 in the second round to keep all six golfers for the Beach under par in the second round.
In the team competition, No. 28 Long Beach State holds a three-stroke lead over No. 20 New Mexico in second place and a nine-stroke lead over San Diego and the hosts Arizona State, tied for third place at -18.
