Long Beach State Perfect With Three Wins Sunday At Inland Empire Classic

9/11/2022 6:26:00 PM | Men's Water Polo

No. 7 Long Beach State dominated despite the busy schedule, pouring in the second and third highest goal totals in school history.

LA VERNE, Calif. – No. 7 Long Beach State made the most of their time at the Inland Empire Classic, playing three games on Sunday and coming away with three dominant wins to close out a weekend that saw the Beach play five games in four days.

Long Beach State (6-3) got off to a strong start against the hosts La Verne in the morning. Senior JJ Loubrial tied four other players in school history to score seven goals in one contest, one off the school record while pacing the Beach in the opening game.

With the second string taking most of the minutes against La Verne (3-5), Garrett Potter also added six goals as the Beach jumped out to an early lead and never looked back on the way to a 27-9 win. The 27 goals scored marked the second-most in program history.

Whittier (1-4) provided a sterner test as Long Beach State's starters opened the game. Tied 2-2 after the opening minutes, Long Beach State scored seven straight goals to open things up on the way to the win over the No. 4 ranked team in Division III. Evan Cain, Aleksandar Timotijevic and Botond Hajdu all scored four goals each to share the lead for Long Beach State.

Utilizing the team's depth in a third game on the day, Long Beach State hit the 20-goal mark once more on the way to a 21-3 win over Ottawa (3-5). Jackson Sanders made seven saves to lead a defensive effort that saw the fewest goals allowed on the season for Long Beach State, while Connor Mannion scored three goals and six other players chipped in two for the win.

Long Beach State will host four games at home this coming weekend at the Ken Lindgren Aquatics Center. On Saturday at 1 p.m. the Beach will take on UC San Diego on ESPN+ before hosting Golden West College immediately following at 2:30 p.m. The same schedule will apply on Sunday as well, as the Beach opens up Golden Coast Conference play against UC Santa Barbara at 1 p.m. before taking on Long Beach City College at 2:30 p.m.

Fans wishing to attend Saturday should note that Atherton will be closed due to the City of Long Beach "Beach Streets" event, so please use Palo Verde to come to the pool.
