The Beach scored 14 goals in both wins on Saturday.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State's home opener went without blemish, as the Beach dropped No. 13 UC San Diego 14-10 before pulling away from Golden West in an exhibition win 14-6.
No. 7 Long Beach State (7-3) jumped out in front of the Tritons and never looked back, controlling the early action. Connor Mannion struck first to give the Beach, and after the Tritons pulled even, the Beach found Rafael Real Vergara for a pair of goals to retake an early edge. Bruno Chiappini then found the net in the final seconds of the first quarter as the Beach established a 5-2 lead after the first quarter.
The Beach extended their lead in the second quarter, as a power play goal from Evan Cain again gave Long Beach State the final goal of the period, and the Beach took a 9-4 lead into halftime over UC Sand Diego (3-6).
Long Beach State would push the advantage to 11-4, and while the Tritons brought the edge back to four at 12-8, the Beach again slammed the door shut with a last second goal, this time from Raul Morales in the third quarter, and ultimately LBSU comfortably claimed the 14-10 win.
In the afternoon matinee, Long Beach State improved to 5-0 all-time against Golden West. Eamon Hennessey of the Rustlers actually struck first, part of his four goals on the day to lead Golden West who took an early lead, and were tied with Long Beach State after the first quarter.
Trailing 4-3, Long Beach State found Botond Hajdu and Garrett Potter for goals down the stretch to take a 5-4 lead into halftime. The Beach then started to pull away, outscoring the Rustlers 4-2 in the third quarter before Abdelrahman Soliman exploded for three goals in the fourth quarter. Along with that effort, the Beach clamped down defensively, closing the doors with Liam Ward in goal and holding Golden West off the board in the final eight on the way to a 14-6 win.
The Beach is back in the Ken Lindgren Aquatics Center for a pair of games on Sunday. Golden Coast Conference play begins for Long Beach State as No. 8 UC Santa Barbara comes to visit, and then the exhibition following will feature Long Beach State's city neighbors, Long Beach City College. The UCSB contest will begin at 1 p.m. on ESPN+, with the LBCC game immediately following at approximately 2:30 p.m.
