LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State put on a clinic Thursday night with four goals on offense and a clean sheet on defense as they picked up their first win of the 2022 season, 4-0. Summer Laskey led the charge with the first multi-goal game of her career.
Lena Silano got the scoring started with her third goal of the season in the 17th minute. On a breakaway, the senior striker drew a foul from the goalkeeper in the box to earn a penalty kick. Her shot went lower left post and in to give the Beach the early 1-0 lead.
The goal goes down as Silano's seventh career game-winner moving her into a tie for fifth most in program history.
The Beach tacked on another in the 38th minute on Laskey's first of the night. Sara Ybarra had possession in the corner, crossing it into Alyssa Reyes just inside the box. Reyes then made the extra pass to Laskey in the middle who buried it into the top of the net for her second goal of the season.
The sophomore found herself in a very similar situation just six minutes later as a cross in from Alia Sinoff found its way into Laskey at the center of the box. She finished with the left for her second of the night and third of the season.
Long Beach State found themselves up 3-0 after a dominant first half. As a team, they were outshooting Fresno State nine-to-six with a six-to-two shot on goal advantage.
Both teams settled down to start the second half as they battled back-and-forth, but LBSU was not done yet netting their fourth goal in the final ten minutes of the match.
As the clock was about to enter the 85th minute, Ybarra launched a ball downfield and past the Bulldog defense. Cherrie Cox ran it down, took control, and after cutting right to beat the final Fresno State defender, launched a shot into the back of the net. It marks the first of her collegiate career giving the Beach their 4-0 win.
Not to be forgotten is the effort from Morgan Houston-Shepherd in net. The redshirt sophomore registered her first clean sheet of the season and totaled four saves on the night. It is the third solo shutout of her career.
The four-goal performance is the highest scoring game for the Beach since a 6-0 win over St. John's on September 7, 2018.
Long Beach State is back on Sunday for the final home match of their season opening home stand as they take on the University of San Diego. Kickoff will be at 7:00 p.m. live on ESPN+.
