Women’s Soccer Continues Homestand with San Diego State, Washington

The Beach is set for week two of the season with two more matches at George Allen Field.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – The Long Beach State women's soccer team is set for two more home matches at George Allen Field this week. They will host the Aztecs of San Diego State on Thursday and the Washington Huskies on Sunday.

ABOUT LAST WEEK
• Long Beach State officially opened their season last week with a 2-2 draw against the University of Pacific and a heartbreaking loss to No. 15 USC.
• In the opener against Pacific, the Beach overcame a goal deficit twice to force the tie. Maddy Perez logged the first goal of the season in the 38th minute while Lena Silano notched an equalizer in the 66th minute. Summer Laskey and Felicia Jastre Hogberg each tallied assists as well.
• Against the 15th-ranked Trojans, a crowd of nearly 1,200 people saw a very exciting, physical match especially in the second half as the Beach tried to mount a comeback. LBSU managed to have a pair of good looks at an equalizer in the final minute, but one missed left and the other was saved to seal the 1-0 loss.
LB NATION APPRECIATION
• Sunday's match against the Trojans saw an attendance of 1,192 people in the stands at George Allen Field. In addition, numbers peaked at over 1,000 of those watching the live broadcast on longbeachstate.com/watch
• After the first week of the season, Long Beach State ranks 13th in the nation in total attendance and 24th in average attendance. Among California schools, they are third in the same two categories. Even more notable, their 98.35 capacity percentage ranks 8th in NCAA.
STAT BREAKDOWN
• The Beach has 2 goals through two games, totaling 22 shots with 12 being on target. Maddy Perez and Lena Silano own the two goals with Silano leading the team with five shots. Felicia Jastre Hogberg is second with four shots, three on goal.
• Defensively, they have fended off 28 shots, only 10 being on target. Morgan Houston-Shepherd and Zora Standifer have split time in net with Standifer leading the duo with six saves and an .857 save percentage.

• After playing #15 USC last weekend, the Beach have one more match against a current Top 25 team (Pepperdine) as of the the week two rankings, and two others receiving votes (Washington, UC Irvine). Including those teams, they will play six teams that posted a .600 win percentage in 2021 and five that made the NCAA Postseason.
PRESEASON NATIONAL HONORS
• After a historic 2021 campaign, Lena Silano has been named to United Soccer Coaches' preseason forwards watch list. She is one of just 41 athletes selected and one of just two from the Big West Conference.
• Felicia Jastre Hogberg is also garnering national attention earning a spot on Top Drawer Soccer's Preseason Freshman Best XI. The list acknowledges the best athletes at each position making her a top three freshman forward in the country.
SILANO'S HISTORIC 2021
• Senior Lena Silano was other-worldly last season scoring 11 of the team's 19 goals, including 6 game-winners. In single-season history, she tied for second most game-winning goals and multi-goal games, tied for fifth most in goals scored, and ranked tied for seventh in total points. She also recorded the third most shots in a season with 74.
• The Aguora Hills native became the second fastest in program history (in terms of fewest games) to 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10 goals as well as 20 points in a season.
THE RETURN OF ACE
• Not a new recruit, but a huge part of the backline that returns in 2022 is Elysia Laramie. A 2018 All-Big West Freshman Team selection and 2019 All-Big West First Team selection, she is expected to return as the leader of the Beach defense.
• After missing 2020 due to COVID and 2021 due to a torn ACL, she will see her first minutes in nearly three years.
FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR ENCORE
• Midfielder Maddy Perez is back for her second year at the Beach after becoming the first Big West Freshman of the Year since 2016. She was also an All-Big West First Team and All-Freshman Team selection.
• She netted the first goal of the Beach season in the opener against Pacific with a long, curving shot over the keeper's head toward the back post. It is the second goal of her collegiate career.
THE NEW RECRUITS
• This year's recruiting class is one catching national attention, ranking #32 in the nation by Top Drawer Soccer. The group includes one forward, four midfielders, and three defenders.
• Cherrie Cox is the headliner of the eight, coming from West Torrance HS. The midfielder is considered a five-star recruit and is coming off back-to-back seasons where she set the record for most goals at her high school.
• Along with Cox in the midfield are Julia Moore, Nani Kia'aina, and a transfer from the University of Arizona, Tianna Sidtikun. Moore garnered some hardware in high school, winning the 2022-23 Player of the Year as well as the SCCAL Midfielder of the Year.
• The defenders in the class are Japan product Kana Uchida, Litzy Morales, and Taylor Freitas. Uchida (Japan) and Morales (Mexico) bring high-level experience to the Beach with both spending multiple years with their respective national teams.
• The lone forward is another international recruit, Felicia Jastré Högberg from Sweden. In two years with division two IFK Fjaras, she scored 36 goals in 22 games, including a career-day with six goals in one game.
SCOUTING THE AZTECS
• San Diego State enters the week with a 2-0 record after a 2-1 win over Nebraska in their season opener and a huge 7-2 win over Idaho in their second match.
• Offensively, they have 18 shots on goal for a 64.3% SOG percentage with nine finding the back of the net. Six of the Aztecs have registered a goal thus far led by Denise Castro's three. She also has an assist for a team-leading seven points.
• Defensively, they've held their opponents to a 10% shot percentage surrendering three goals in two games. Their goalkeepers own a 47.1% save percentage with Alexa Madueno registering seven saves.
• Historically, Long Beach State is 6-5-2 all-time against San Diego State and are 4-0-1 in the last five meetings. Last year, the Beach won the matchup 2-1 with a pair of goals from Silano.
SCOUTING THE HUSKIES
• Washington enters week two of the season unblemished, going 2-0 with a pair of shutouts in the first week of the season. They beat Fresno State 3-0 in the opener and followed with a 5-0 win over Air Force.
• Offensively, they've totaled 37 shots with 22 being on target, for a 59/5% SOG percentage. Karlee Stueckle and Hailey Still each have two goals with Stueckle owning a team-high five points. In total, they have six players with a goal this season.
• Even more notable then owning two shutouts, the Husky defense has allowed just five shots through their first two matches. In net, they've split the time with both Olivia Sekany and Olivia Juarez registering one save each.
• This will be just the second all-time matchup between the Beach and Huskies. Last year was the first, resulting in a double overtime 1-1 tie. Silano scored the equalizing goal with just over a minute to play to force overtime.
