The Beach had two very good looks at an equalizing goal in the final minute, but neither found the back of the net.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – In front of a crowd of 1,192 people, Long Beach State played an extremely hard-fought 90 minutes against No. 15 USC. Unfortunately, they came up short falling to the Trojans by a score of 1-0.
The loss moves the Beach to 0-1-1 after the first week of the season while USC moves to 1-1-0.
The 15th-ranked Trojans broke the shutout early with a goal in the seventh minute on an Aaliyah Farmer header on a corner kick. Despite being outshot 7-1, the Beach defense held strong after the goal and kept it a 1-0 game going into halftime.
The second half was a very exciting 45 minutes of soccer as both sides went back-and-forth in a very physical battle. Within four minutes of being back on the pitch, Aimee Medwin fired the first shot on goal for the Beach but it was saved by the USC keeper.
For the rest of the half, five different Long Beach State players recorded a shot forcing a pair of saves from the USC goalie.
The Beach found themselves with a corner kick in the final minute looking for the equalizer. It ultimately led to two shots capped off by a Julia Moore strike to the lower left corner with about 15 seconds on the clock. Sadly, the Trojan keeper made the save to seal the 1-0 final score giving Long Beach State a heartbreaking loss.
Zora Standifer was phenomenal in net taking over in the second half. In her 45 minutes of action, she registered four saves.
The crowd of nearly 1,200 people is the largest for a non-conference match since attendance record was set in the 2019 season opener against UCLA.
Long Beach State continues their homestand next week with two more matches at George Allen Field. The first will be against San Diego State on Thursday at 7:00 p.m.
