Schulze’s Walkoff Home Run Upsets No. 8 UCLA in 12 Innings

Peyton Schulze launched his first career home run to give the Dirtbags a midweek win over the Bruins.
Facing a new pitcher in the bottom of the twelfth, Schulze was looking to snap an 0-for-4 day at the plate. The first pitch from UCLA's James Hepp was a fastball over the heart of the plate that he did not miss. With an exit velocity of 104mph and projected 407 feet, the freshman sent Dirtbag nation home happy with the upset over No. 8 UCLA.

The Bruins got the scoring started early with single runs in the first and second and tacked on another sixth for a 3-0 lead. But the Dirtbags answered in the bottom half of the sixth.
After a single and error put two runners on, Jonathon Long smoked a double off the top of the wall to drive in a pair and make it a one-run ballgame.
In the seventh, Tyler White got a rally started with a one-out double to right field. A menace on the base paths, he forced a balk to put the tying run 90 feet away. The next pitch to Connor Burns was sent into left field for an RBI single to tie the game up at three.
That score held until the twelfth when Schulze walked it off giving the Dirtbags the 4-3 victory.
On the mound, it was a staff day as Long Beach State had eight different pitchers throw at least one inning on the evening. The biggest standout was Ethan Clough who threw two perfect innings with three strikeouts. Noah Carabajal was the last pitcher to throw, picked up his first career victory with two scoreless innings.
The Dirtbags will be back in action this weekend as they continue their home stand against UC Riverside.
