After a leadoff double, three straight walks in the bottom of the ninth gave the Dirtbags a 4-3 walkoff victory.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State (19-25, 8-11 Big West) notched their second consecutive walkoff victory in a 4-3 win over UC Riverside (7-34, 3-19 Big West) on Friday night. The Dirtbags have now won four of their last five games.
Long Beach State got the scoring started with a run in the bottom of the first on a Rocco Peppi grounder to score Eddie Saldivar. After UCR tied it with a run in the top of the second, the Dirtbags answered back immediately on a Kaden Moeller RBI single.
The 2-1 score held until the sixth when the Highlanders plated a pair on a two-RBI single to take the lead. However, a Chase Luttrell RBI single in the bottom half tied things up at three.
Matt Fields took over on the mound for the Dirtbags and was perfect. In three innings of work, the right-hander faced the minimum nine batters, recording five strikeouts to keep the game tied heading into the bottom of the ninth.
Jonathon Long got the final at-bats started with a double down the left field line. UCR opted to intentionally walk the next two hitters to load the bases for Tyler White with nobody out. In an eight-pitch battle, the freshman center fielder drew a walk to force in the game-winning run and give the Dirtbags a 4-3 victory.
Long carried the offense on Friday night, going 3-for-4 with a run scored out of the five-spot. Saldivar, Luttrell, and Moeller recorded the other three hits.
The Dirtbags will look to take the series tomorrow afternoon at Bohl Diamond at Blair Field. First pitch against UC Riverside will be at 3:00 p.m.
