Despite the 3-0 loss, Long Beach State still won the series over the rival Titans.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State (26-27, 14-13 Big West) fell in the series finale, 3-0, against Cal State Fullerton (20-32, 12-15 Big West) on Sunday afternoon. It is just their second loss in the last 10 games, but still end the weekend with four consecutive series wins.
The Dirtbags were on the wrong end of a pitchers' duel for the finale as Fynn Chester threw a complete game shutout. Needing just 76 pitches, the right-hander allowed just three hits to Long Beach State hitters and retired 23 consecutive batters at one point.
The scoring was early with the Titans plating one in the first and two more in the third on a two-run home run with that 3-0 lead holding the rest of the ballgame.
All three runs came against starting pitcher Zach Voelker, who lasted three innings. The bullpen combination of Jonathan Carlos, Josh Haley, Ethan Clough, Dalton Ponce, and Jake Rons tossed the final six innings allowing just five hits and two walks without allowing a run.
The only hits for the Dirtbags came from Sebastian Murillo and Eddie Saldivar in the first inning and a pinch hit single from Devereaux Harrison in the bottom of the ninth.
Long Beach State will wrap up their season next weekend at UC Davis with a three-game series with the Aggies.
