Juaron Watts-Brown had a phenomenal outing in the series finale, but the Dirtbags fell 2-1 on Sunday.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State (17-25, 7-11 Big West) was on the wrong end of a pitchers' duel with UC Irvine (24-17, 10-8 Big West) in Sunday's series finale. The Dirtbags fell 2-1 to wrap up the weekend, but still own the series victory over the Anteaters.
Juaron Watts-Brown got the start on the mound and was nasty. In six innings of work, he racked up a career-high 10 strikeouts on 100 pitches. He surrendered just one run on three hits and two walks, but did not factor into the decision.
The Dirtbags got the scoring started in the third inning on an RBI single from Rocco Peppi to drive in Connor Burns and put the Long Beach State up early.
However, UC Irvine would answer back with the tying run in the top of the fourth and then take the lead in the top of the seventh.
Unfortunately for the Dirtbag offense, after the Peppi single, they did not record a hit and only had one baserunner between the third and ninth inning. That ninth inning knock came as a two-out single from Chase Luttrell representing the tying run, but a popout stranded him and gave the Dirtbags a 2-1 loss.
Long Beach State continues their home stand with No. 13 UCLA on Tuesday night. First pitch from Bohl Diamond at Blair Field will be at 6:00 p.m.
