Long Beach State Track and Field to Host Challenge Cup

The Beach is having their second home meet as they welcome Cal State Fullerton, UC Santa Barbara, and UC Irvine to the Jack Rose track on Friday.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – The Long Beach State track and field team is back at home as they are set to host their second meet at the Jack Rose Track on Friday. The Beach along with Big West institutions Cal State Fullerton, UC Santa Barbara, and UC Irvine will all be competing in the 27th annual Challenge Cup.

After no Challenge Cup for the past two years, Long Beach State will look to retain the title and raise the cup for the second consecutive time. The Beach has won 11 of the last 12 cups that includes a span of 10 consecutive from 2008-17. LBSU also holds the record for most points in a single Challenge Cup when totaled 231 back in 2008.
The competition at the Jack Rose Track begins at 1:15 p.m. with the women's Javelin and men's Hammer while track events start at 3:00 p.m. with the women's 4x100m Relay.
In addition to the Challenge Cup, some athletes will be doubling their efforts this weekend as the Beach will also compete in the Triton Invitational, hosted by UC San Diego. Competition in La Jolla will be on Saturday beginning at 9:30 a.m.
Jason Smith and Mohammed Mohamed will look to defend their Big West Athlete of the Week honors. The duo earned the Men's Field and Men's Track honors, respectively, this past week after some dominant performances at the Hayward Premiere. Smith brought home a pair of victories and meet records in the High Jump and Long Jump, while Mohamed entered LBSU's all-time with a record time on his way to victory in the 800m Run.
Also at the Hayward Premiere in Oregon, Michael Phillips was on top of his game, setting a new lifetime best and school record in the men's 5000m run with a time of 13:58.20; this performance moved him to first place in the conference. Ryley Fick also moved into second place all time with a time of 4:26.65 in the women's 1500m; she is ranked second in the Big West for the event. Allie Scimia moved into eighth place in Long Beach history in the 5000m run with a time of 17:01.52. Rahni Turner had an outstanding performance on the first day of the meet, leaping 5.77m in the Long Jump for the best jump of her young career before ending the weekend with a second-place finish in the 100m Hurdles.
On the final day of competition, the throwing duo of Sebastian Coleman and Charlie Vernoy beat the previous Hayward Premiere discus record with throws of 56.65m and 56.49m respectively. They finished one-two-three with teammate Alec Jones, who had a throw of 54.17m. Crystal Washington had a great day on the field, winning the women's Triple Jump with a jump of 12.61m; she is ranked in the top fifteen in the nation. LeNaya Griffin ran a time of 54.43 in the women's 400m to take first place and beat the previous meet record. Joseph Anderson set a meet record in the 110m High Hurdles with a time of 14.14, a time that would also win the event. Austin Brown won his 400m race with a time of 47.06, pushing him into second place in the conference. Mohammed Mohamed posted a lifetime best in the 800m race of 1:48.49, which also launched him into second place all time. Alex Kalmar, a freshman, followed closely behind him with a time of 1:50.02, giving Kalmar a second place finish and eleventh all time.
Long Beach State invites fans to attend with general admission tickets being $10 and tickets for fans between the ages of 3 and 12 or over 60 are $8. LBSU students get in for free with valid ID. UC San Diego invites fans to their stadium, with general admission being $10.
