Long Beach State will look to turn things around against the first-place Mustangs.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State is on the road for their next conference series as they head up to San Luis Obispo, Calif. this weekend. The Dirtbags will look to turn things around against first-place Cal Poly in a three-game set.

ABOUT LAST WEEK
• The Dirtbags went 2-2 last week with a midweek win over Pepperdine before dropping their second consecutive conference series of the season.
• The midweek at Pepperdine resulted in a 5-4 Long Beach State win as all nine starters recorded a hit in the victory. Jonathon Long led the way, going 3-for-5 with a double, run scored, and two RBI.
• In game one against UCSD, the Dirtbags trailed by three after seven innings and a Chris Jimenez two-run home run started a late-game rally for the Dirtbags. Unfortunately, the rally came up short falling 7-6 on Friday night.
• On Saturday, the Tritons put up three runs in the second to take the lead and never let up. The 7-4 game two win handed LBSU the series loss.
• In the finale, Zach Voelker and Matt Fields combined for a two-hit shutout to avoid the sweep. It marked the Dirtbags' fourth shutout victory of the season. Jimenez had the big swing again, launching his team-leading fifth homer of the year.
MIDWEEK DOWN I-5
• Tuesday marked the final midweek game on the road for the Dirtbags as they drove down I-5 to face San Diego State at Tony Gwynn Stadium. Unfortunately for Long Beach State, the Aztecs came out on top 5-1.
• The LBSU offense just couldn't get going notching just five hits, three singles and two doubles, and no runs driven in. Rocco Peppi, 2-for-4, scored the only run on a wild pitch in the sixth.
ABOUT CAL POLY
• The Mustangs enter the weekend as the No. 17 team in the nation according to Collegiate Baseball. They sport an 18-11 overall record and conference leading 5-1 mark in Big West play.
• The Cal Poly offense owns a .284/.379/.436 averaging 6.6 runs per game. The lineup is headed up by All-American and Golden Spikes Watch List member, Brooks Lee. The shortstop leads not only Cal Poly, but the conference with a .430 average, 1.282 OPS, 49 hits, 17 doubles, 35 RBI, and 86 total bases.
• The pitching staff owns a team 4.34 ERA with opponents hitting .266 against them. Drew Thorpe leads the way as the Friday night ace. His 2.19 ERA in 49.1 innings along with the 75-11 strikeout-walk ratio has earned him on the Golden Spikes Midseason Watch List.

• This weekend marks the 155th, 156th, and 157th games between the two programs with Long Beach State leading the all-time series 95-58-1. When playing in San Luis Obispo, the Dirtbags own a 44-27-1 record.
• The teams split last year's four-game series in the abbreviated 2021 season, but Cal Poly has won eight of the last 10 matchups.
PRESEASON FAVORITES
• The Big West Conference announced the results of the preseason coaches' poll and the 'Bags were tabbed as the favorites in the league prior to opening day. They received 7 first-place votes and 97 total points.
• It marks the first time Long Beach State has been voted as the favorites since the 2008 preseason poll when they topped rival Cal State Fullerton by three points.
• UC Irvine (3 first place votes, 92 points) and UC Santa Barbara (1 first place votes, 81 points) also received first place votes and round out the top three in the poll.
MLB OPENING DAY IS HERE
