Dirtbags Cannot Overcome First Inning Deficit in Game One at Cal Poly

Long Beach State dropped game one after the Mustangs’ scored four runs in the first.
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Long Beach State (14-14, 3-5 Big West) fell behind early against No. 17 Cal Poly (19-11, 6-1 Big West) and could not spark a comeback in game one on Friday night. The loss moves the Dirtbags back to .500 for the first time since the second weekend of the season.
The four runs came quick for the Mustangs in the bottom of the first. After a groundout got things started, six straight CP hitters would reach base including a pair of home runs. In total, they scored four runs (one unearned) on three hits and an error.
Marques Johnson was phenomenal out of the bullpen, keeping the Dirtbags in the game despite the early deficit. After entering with two outs in the first inning, the right-hander totaled 6.1 innings without allowing a run. He notched seven strikeouts and retired 19 of the 20 batters he faced.
Johnson handed the ball off to Jake Rons, who tossed a shutout eighth inning as the duo totaled 7.1 innings without a run coming across and surrendering just one hit.
The Dirtbags had a chance in the eighth with runners on second and third, nobody out. Unfortunately, Cal Poly's Jason Franks would go onto strike out the side to escape the jam. They had another chance in the ninth with two aboard and just one away, but Franks picked up two more strikeouts to pitch out of that jam as well.
Despite out-hitting the Mustangs, seven to four, the Dirtbags would fall in the opener by the score of 4-1. The offense left eight runners on base, including five in the final two innings.
Game two in San Luis Obispo is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. Saturday afternoon.
