Dirtbags Shutout UC Irvine for Black and Blue Rivalry Series Win

Marques Johnson and Devereaux Harrison combined for the team’s fifth shutout of the season.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State (17-24, 7-10 Big West) tossed their fifth shutout of the season to take game two against rival UC Irvine (23-17, 9-8 Big West) on Saturday afternoon. The 4-0 victory gives the Dirtbags the Black and Blue rivalry series win.
It was a pitchers' duel on Saturday at Bohl Diamond at Blair Field. For Long Beach State, it was Marques Johnson on the mound tossing seven shutout innings allowing just two hits and striking out six. The right-hander set a new career-high in innings and 102 pitches on the afternoon. He handed the ball off to Devereaux Harrison, who picked up his fifth win of the season, tossed two scoreless frames striking out three and allowing just two hits.
It was scoreless through seven as neither side could get any offense going until the Long Beach State rallied for four runs in the eighth. After a walk and single started the inning, Eddie Saldivar punched a two-RBI single through the right side to give the Dirtbags a 2-0 lead.
From there, Sebastian Murillo, Rocco Peppi, and Chase Luttrell all rattled off singles of their own giving LBSU four runs on four consecutive hits to make it a 4-0 ballgame.
Harrison came back out for his second inning of work, shutting down the Anteater offense for the 4-0 shutout victory.
The win snaps a streak of five consecutive series losses and marks their first win in the Black and Blue Rivalry since 2017.
The Dirtbags will look for the sweep in tomorrow's finale. First pitch is at 1:00 p.m.
