Long Beach State Falls To UCI In Big West Championship Tournament Semis

Honolulu, Hawai'i — In a renewal of the Black and Blue Rivalry, Long Beach State couldn't mount the comeback in a hard-fought 11-7 loss to UC Irvine in the Big West Championship Tournament semifinals Friday at Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.
After four minutes of no score in the first period, UCI's Jessica Lynch scored to give the Anteaters a 1-0 lead.
Senior Lena Kotanchyan answered back 13 seconds later to even the game.
After UCI went on a 2-0 run, Kotanchyan and senior Orsi Hertzka answered right back in the final minute to make it a 3-3 game after the first period.
In a game of runs, UCI responded with another 2-0 run to take a 5-3 lead with 3:51 left in the third period.
The Beach made it a 5-4 game at halftime after Anne De Kleer converted on a powerplay.
After another exclusion call the Anteaters' Isabel Rack answered right back to give UCI a 6-4 lead with 6:15 left in the third period.
The Beach tied the game with 2:24 left in the third period after Hertzka converted a penalty shot and Rachael Kowalchick scored on backhand goal.
After the 6-6 tie, UCI went on a 5-1 run to finish the game.
Hertzka led the Beach with three goals and Kotanchyan had two goals. In the cage, Chelsea Oliver had six saves.
