LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State (15-20) suffered a 4-3 loss in their midweek against Fresno State (19-18) on Wednesday night. The Dirtbags have now lost six straight games.
The Bulldogs got the scoring started early as a single and back-to-back doubles led to a pair of runs in the top half of the first. They added two more in the fourth and held a four-run lead through five innings.
The Dirtbags rallied for two runs in the sixth starting with an Eddie Saldivar triple to lead off the inning. He would come in to score on a wild pitch and end the shutout. Chase Luttrell kept things going with a single into right before coming around to score on Peyton Schulze's first career triple.
After both sides were kept off the board in the seventh, Long Beach State tacked on another run in the eighth. Tyler White came through with a two-out infield single and moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. In a heated battle, Chris Jimenez sent the twelfth pitch of the AB into left field for an RBI single making it a 4-3 ballgame.
Needing one to tie and two to walk it off, the Dirtbags got a two-out infield single from Saldivar to bring the winning run to the plate. Unfortunately a groundout would end the ballgame.
The trio of Jake Rons, Noah Carabajal, and Jonathan Carlos were nails out of the bullpen shutting down the potent Fresno State offense for the final 4.2 innings.
Offensively, Saldivar led the way with a three-hit night, going 3-for-4 out of the two-spot to go along with a run scored. Tyler Porter was the only other 'Bag to reach base multiple times with a hit and a walk in four plate appearances.
Long Beach State is back on the road this weekend as they head to UC Santa Barbara for a three-game set with the first-place Gauchos.
