No. 11 Long Beach State Uses Second-Half Surage To Defeat Gauchos

Santa Barbara, Calif. — No. 11 Long Beach State used a second-half surge to cruise by No. 18 UC Santa Barbara Saturday afternoon as the Beach defeated the Gauchos 14-9 to claim the Beach's first conference win.
Anne De Kleer scored four goals to tie her season high as LBSU (12-12, 1-2) got it done offensively and defensively in the fourth period.
UCSB got off to a quick start after Caitlyn Snyder scored on a 6-on-5 opportunity and Drew Halvorson scored less than a minute later to give the Gauchos a 2-0 lead in the first period.
Amanda Price kept the Beach close as she scored two goals to tie the game at 2-2 midway through the first period.
The Gauchos responded to take the lead but Elena Kotanchyan's first goal tied the game at 3-3 after the first period.
There were four ties in the first half, but Orsi Hertzka gave the Beach a 6-5 lead at halftime when she connected on a penalty shot.
The Beach came out hot in the second half as Anne De Kleer, Hertzka and Kotanchyan each found the back of the net to push LBSU's lead to 9-5 with five minutes left in the third period.
After a timeout, UCSB stormed back scoring three straight goals after the timeout to cut the Beach's lead to 9-8 with 45 seconds left in the third period.
Marilia Mimides answered back to give the Beach a 10-8 lead heading into the final period.
The Beach pulled away in the first five minutes of the fourth period after De Kleer scored a hat trick and Kowalchick scored once to give LBSU a 14-8 lead.
LBSU will be back in action next week as the Beach takes on UC Davis and Hawai'i.
