
Beach Closes Out Hayward Premiere with Four Meet Records

Long Beach State had five athletes beat Hayward Premiere records and totaled six event wins.
EUGENE, Ore. – Long Beach State had another tremendous day to wrap up the Hayward Premiere in Oregon on Saturday. In total, they set four new Hayward Premiere records and posted six event victories on the day.
Mohammed Mohamed and Alex Kalmar had a phenomenal race in the men's 800m, finishing one-two in the event. Both set new lifetime-bests, with Mohamed's time of 1:48.29 also putting him at second on Long Beach State's all-time list. Kalmar was not far behind with a new career-best time of 1:50.02 that ranks as the eleventh-fastest time in program history.
The Big West leading trio of Sebastian Coleman, Charlie Vernoy, and Alec Jones continued their dominant ways with another one-two-three finish. Coleman's mark of 56.65m (185-10) led the way, beating the previous meet record by over two feet. Vernoy also beat the old meet-best with a throw of 56.49m (185-4) to put him second. Jones rounded out the top three finish with a mark of 54.17m (177-8).
Jason Smith competed in his third jump event of the season and is now three-for-three in wins. Clearing the bar at 2.13m (6-11.75), the fifth year is the new Hayward Premiere Long Jump record holder. It is his second victory of the weekend and moves him into second on the Big West performance list.
The other two meet records of the day came out on the track, starting with LeNaya Griffin. With a time of 54.53 in the women's 400m Dash, the senior took home the victory beating the previous Hayward Premiere record by almost a full second.
Joseph Anderson recorded the fourth meet record of the day in the men's 110m High Hurdles. Finishing one one-hundredth off his personal best, the junior transfer's time of 14.14 ranks him at the top in the meet's history as well as giving him the victory. He also competed in the men's 400m Hurdles where he posted a sixth place finish with a PR time of 53.14.
In the men's 400m, Austin Brown ran the best race of his career. Picking up the victory, his time of 47.06 marks a new lifetime-best and puts him at number two in the conference. The junior sprinter also ran the front leg of the men's 4x100m Relay team, where the quartet finished second with a 40.69.
The team's final win of the day came in the women's Triple Jump courtesy of Crystal Washington. Launching herself 12.61m (41-4.5), she dominated the event winning almost a full foot and a half. The senior still ranks in the top 15 of the nation in the event.
After a tremendous effort in Long Jump yesterday, Rahni Turner came back on Saturday for a second place finish in the women's 100m Hurdles. Hailey Fune came in sixth for the event with a time of 14.25.
The Beach will return to action next weekend as they host the Challenge Cup on Friday, April 8.
