Phillips Sets School Record, Smith Posts Meet Record on Day One in Oregon

Long Beach State had a strong showing on day one in Oregon and closed out the West Coast Relays with a lot of new personal bests.

EUGENE, Ore. – Competing in arguably the most prestigious venue in the country, Long Beach State had a fantastic day one in Eugene, Ore. The cold 53-degree weather with wind and light rain did not stop the Beach from posting a new meet record, a pair of top ten program marks, and some impressive new lifetime-bests.

For the second time this outdoor season, LBSU saw a new school record set as Michael Phillips beat the previous best in the men's 5000m. Setting a new lifetime-best, the junior transfer raced to a 13:58.20 beating Arturo Sotomayor's record by over five seconds. It also moves into the top spot for the conference performance list.
 
Jason Smith made it a perfect two-for-two in the men's Long Jump winning the event by almost two feet on Friday night. The fifth year launched himself 7.69m (25-2.75) setting a new Hayward Premiere record in the event. It also marks a new season-best as he improves on his Big West leading jump.
 
The distance duo of Ryley Fick and Allie Scimia etched their name into the program record books once again. In the women's 1500m race, Fick finished posted a time of 4:26.65 moving her into fourth on the all-time list. The junior now ranks second in the Big West for the event. For Scimia, she raced to a 17:01.52 time in the women's 5000m for the best performance of her young collegiate career. The freshman now ranks eighth on Long Beach State's top ten.
 
Rahni Turner had one of the most impressive days among all competitors, however. Of the 29 athletes competing in women's Long Jump at the Hayward Premiere, the freshman was 23rd on the performance list at the start of the day. Despite the difficult weather, she launched herself 5.77m (18-11.25) improving to the third best jumper at the meet and shattered her previous personal best by 18.25 inches.
 
FRESNO, Calif. – With a split squad, Long Beach State also finished competition at the West Coast Relays in Fresno. On the day, more than 20 new lifetime-bests were set out in Fresno.
 
Results
 
One of the more impressive personal bests came in the women's Discus as Malia Talavou posted a throw of 48.61m (159-5) to finish seventh place. It surpasses her previous best by three and a half feet and moves her into fourth in the conference. Keeley Rasmussen also posted a new lifetime-best in the event with a mark of 42.79m (140-4) besting her previous career-high by almost six feet. She now ranks in the top fifteen of the conference.
 
Elsewhere in the field events, the men's Pole Vault trio of Cyprus Rice, Nathan Garibay, and Spencer Eley finished five-six-seven. Rice and Garibay both cleared the bar at 4.76m (15-7.25) which matches each of their lifetime-bests while Spencer Eley just missed his PR with a clearance of 4.61m (15-1.5).
 
The track events is where a bulk of the Beach personal-bests came from led by Jaelyn Predium. In the women's 200m, the sophomore posted a time of 24.79 which sits just outside the program's top ten times. Natalie Tolento and Kayla Reynante also posted lifetime-bests in the event with times of 25.55 and 28.15, respectively.
 
In the men's 100m, Mekhi Mays raced to a fifth place finish on Friday afternoon. It marks a new personal record for the sophomore. He also posted a new PR in the 200m Dash with a time of 21.75 in seventh place. Jack De Bos also posted a new career-best in the event with a 22.23.
 
Bronwyn Bunnell also had a strong day in the women's 800m. Finishing eleventh, the grad transfer's time of 2:12.96 marks a new lifetime-best and moves her into the conference's top ten.
 
Long Beach State will finish up competition at the Hayward Premiere in Eugene, Ore. tomorrow. Action begins on the field at 11:00 a.m.
