Beach Trio Finish Top Three at UCR, Throwers Continue Strong Season at UCLA

It was a busy, but very successful day for the Long Beach State track and field team.
RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The Long Beach State multis trio had an even better day two at the UCR Spring Classic on Friday. Hailey Fune and Kayla Reynante finished second and third respectively in the women's Heptathlon while Spencer Eley finished third in the men's Decathlon.
Results
Fune totaled 4,674 points for the meet, which ranks number two for the Big West Conference this season. She started the day with her best event, leaping 5.56m (18-3) in the Long Jump for 717 points and a third place finish. It marks a new lifetime-best and ranks sixth in the conference. In the Javelin, she posted a throw of 31.04m (101-10) for 496 points and a time of 2:39.84 in the 800m for 575 points to close out the Heptathlon.
In her first Heptathlon, Reynante finished third with 4,068 points. She started the day with a jump of 4.98m (16-4.25) in the Long Jump before finishing third in the Javelin with a throw of 31.19m (102-4). She ended her first Heptathlon with a victory in the 800m, posting a lifetime-best time of 2:36.48.
Also competing in his first multi-event, Eley came out third place in the men's Decathlon with a total of 5,680 points. His day started with an 18.91 in the 110m Hurdles and a throw of 27.40m (89-10) in Discus. The freshman then dominated Pole Vault, clearing the bar at 4.65m (15-3) to win by over a foot and give him 804 points. The Decathlon ended with a 39.57m (129-10) throw in Javelin and a second place finish in the 1500m with a time of 4:53.54 for 632 points.
LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Out in Los Angeles, the throwers and distance runners were off to a great start to their weekend at UCLA. The group totaled a pair of wins and four total top three finishes.

The two-time Big West Men's Field Athlete of the Week, Sebastian Coleman continued his string of dominant performances with a win in men's Hammer. His throw of 63.72m (209 feet) beat the top UCLA thrower by over two feet. The Beach also had Alec Jones (61.16m, 200-8) finish fourth, Charlie Vernoy (59.10m, 193-10) fifth, and Pablo Gamez (58.71m, 192-7) post a new lifetime-best in sixth.
In the women's Hammer, Keeley Rasmussen turned in a new lifetime-best throw. Her mark of 51.34m (168-5) gave her a seventh place finish, and is tied for the sixth furthest throw in the Big West.
Marcos Gonzalez made it back-to-back wins with a Javelin win today to follow up his win at USC last week. His throw of 62.36m (204-7) was just shy of his lifetime-best and beat the top UCLA thrower by a foot and a half. While it is not his best throw this season, he still ranks second in the conference.
Out on the track, Ryley Fick raced to a second place finish in the women's 3000m Steeplechase. Her time of 10:26.28 was eight seconds ahead of the next Big West competitor as she now owns the top time in the conference. On the men's side, Ricky Villa also finished second in the 3000m Steeplechase with a time of 9:25.25.
There were other lifetime-bests out on the track as Brieanna Tafoya ran to a PR of 4:38.84 for a thirteenth place finish in the women's 1500m. It ranks just outside the top ten top conference times thus far. In the men's Mile, Alex Kalmar finished seventh with a time of 4:07.03 marking a new lifetime-best for the true freshman.
Long Beach State will be back at UCLA tomorrow for the Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner-Kersee Invitational which is made up of the rest of the throws along with jumps and sprints. The field events will begin at 10:00 a.m. with the track events starting at 1:05 p.m.
