Arroyo will be entering his 16th season as the Men’s Water Polo Head Coach in 2022.
LONG BEACH, Calif. — Long Beach State Men's Water Polo Head Coach Gavin Arroyo has signed a contract extension through the 2027 season, LBSU Executive Director of Athletics Andy Fee announced.
Arroyo just completed his 15th season with the Beach as he led the team to the 2021 Golden Coast Conference Tournament championship after finishing as the regular season champions. Arroyo was also named the GCC Coach of the Year for the second time. The Beach also qualified for the NCAA tournament for the second time in three seasons after making it to the quarterfinals in 2018.
"I could not be happier to reaffirm our department's commitment to excellence for Beach Aquatics," Fee said. "Under Coach Arroyo's leadership, Beach student-athletes have achieved new heights in the classroom, community, and in the pool. I am excited to support Gavin in our shared vision for the future and continue to build upon the tremendous foundation he has already put in place. I want to thank President Jane Close Conoley and her leadership team for their support and dynamic vision."
Under Arroyo, the Beach has had nine All-Americans during the team's two NCAA Tournament trips in the last three seasons while becoming a perennial Top 10 program in the country.
"I've been here for 15 years, and Andy (Fee) has been the first athletic director to give me more than a one-year contract," Arroyo said. "During these times of COVID and uncertainty, to get a five-year extension is incredible. It provides stability for the program and stability for my family. I couldn't be happier."
In 2020, Arroyo was inducted into the USA Water Polo Hall of Fame after being an icon of the sport. Under Arroyo, the Beach has posted a winning record the last five seasons and has had numerous athletes called up to play for their respective national teams.
Among the Long Beach State student-athletes called to represent their national team are Evan Cain, Garrett Zaan, Matt Morris, Rafael Real Vergara, Abdelrahman Soliman, Raul Morales, Nolan McConnell, Duncan Lynde and Thomas Freeman.
Arroyo had been an assistant coach for the USA National team and most recently was with Team USA as they took Gold at the 2022 FINA Intercontinental Cup in Lima, Peru. Arroyo was also with the team when they competed at the 2020 Tokyo Games.
Arroyo is a two-time Olympian competing 1996 and 2000 Olympic Games. At Cal, Arroyo was an All-American in 1993 and was a member of three NCAA Championship squads in 1990, 1991 and 1992.
