Softball Splits First League Doubleheader At UC Riverside

3/19/2022 6:56:00 PM | Softball

Kyra Snyder and Ashley Inae each had three hits in the opening game.

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Long Beach State rallied the bats to pick up a game one win, but couldn't do it a second time in a split of Saturday's doubleheader at UC Riverside in the conference opener for both teams.

Long Beach State (11-15, 1-1 Big West) rallied to pick up the game one win, 9-7 in eight innings,  despite getting off to a tough start as UC Riverside (10-14, 1-1 Big West) jumped out to a big first inning lead.

With one out, two walks put two runners on for the Highlanders, and a single by Marissa Burk scored the first run of the game. A Gigi Arak home run made the score 3-0, and then another two-run home run, this time from Max Ortega gave UC Riverside a 5-0 lead after just one inning.

The Beach bounced back quickly though. Kyra Snyder and Ashleigh Inae started off the second inning with back-to-back singles, and then Marissa Caballero scored both with a double into left. A single from Jacquelyn Bickar scored one more run, and Naomi Hernandez singled in another run, cutting the UCR lead to a single run at 5-4.

A two-run home run from Kyra Snyder put the Beach in front in the third inning, and Samantha Fowler was in command for her five innings, helping turn the momentum on the day. Fowler gave up a solo home run in the fifth, but that was her only hit allowed while striking out five batters.

Moving through seven tied at 6-6 after the solo home run from Burk, Long Beach State was able to regain control of the game with a big eighth inning. Snyder again got the action started with a hit, and after an error put runners on the corners, a sacrifice fly put the Beach on top 7-6. A double from Bickar brought home a key insurance run, and Mikayla Ceballos drove in Bickar with an RBI single to make the score 9-6.

Shelby Frutoz collected the win, giving up a run in the eighth but holding on to pick up her fifth win of the year, best on the team.

Long Beach State rallied multiple times in the second game, but couldn't lift over the top of the Highlanders again like the first game.

UC Riverside pushed across an unearned run in the first inning, and took advantage of a pair of walks to bring home two runs after a double from Haylee Kela, taking a 3-0 lead after two innings.

The Beach rallied in the top of the third, as Sara Olson, Hernandez, Inae and Corissa Sweet hit four straight singles to score two runs, and then a sacrifice fly from Kyra Snyder scored Inae to tie the game at three.

This time, however, UC Riverside maintained their momentum with a big bottom of the fifth, scoring five runs with the big hits coming on two straight doubles from Nadia Witt and Lauryn Garewal.

Long Beach State fought back once more, scoring four runs in the top of the fifth inning, cutting the lead to 8-7, and the teams traded runs once again as the Beach would pull within one a final time at 9-8. Chrys Hildebrand came on and picked up three outs in the top of the seventh to finish off the save and even the win column between the teams on the day.

The series finale is set for Sunday, with first pitch scheduled at 1 p.m. from Amy S. Harrison Field in Riverside.
