Long Beach State Shuts Down ASU To Open Barbara Kalbus Invite

Newport Beach, Calif. — Opening the Barbara Kalbus Invitational on Friday, No. 13 Long Beach State got defensive as the Beach defeated No. 9 Arizona State 9-7 at Corona Del Mar High School.
Orsi Hertzka, Mariah Walker, Rachael Kowalchick and Elena Kotanchan all scored two goals, but it was the Beach defense that shined to shut down the Aztec offense to come away with the win.
The Beach stopped the Sun Devils on 9-of-10 power plays to hold off a potent ASU offense that tied the game and took the lead in the second period after LBSU (8-7) took a 4-2 lead after the first.
Katie Dill and Kotanchyan scored back-to-back goals to put the Beach up 8-6 with two minutes remaining in the third period.
LBSU allowed only two goals in the second half in a dominant showing.
The Beach will now head to UC Irvine's campus to take on No. 2 USC Saturday at 9:15 a.m.
