Long Beach State shot 63.1 percent overall and 57.1 percent from three in the win.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State hit 16 threes, shooting 57.1 percent from behind the arc as a shorthanded Long Beach State team had no trouble finding the bottom of the net to outscore UC San Diego in an offensive showcase on Thursday night, winning 103-87.
Long Beach State (16-10) was limited to just eight players on Thursday in the unique game with new Big West members UC San Diego (11-15), who are playing a full conference schedule, but one that does not count towards the final Big West standings.
With that in mind, Long Beach State turned to its bench players, and got a lift from all four on the night. Most notably, freshman Tobias Rotegaard made his first career start and shined offensively, going 5-for-6 from three and making five rebounds while grabbing five rebounds and finishing with a career-high 17 points.
All five starters ended up in double-figures for Long Beach State, led by Joel Murray with 27, but the bench had key games. Eddie Scott scored seven points, AJ Neal finished with a career-high seven as well, and Jeffrey Yan had a career-high five rebounds while also picking up a key basket.
Neither team could miss in the first half, as the teams raced through the first 20 minutes to over 110 points combined, with UC San Diego leading going into the break, 57-55. The Tritons hit 11 3-pointers in the first half to offset nearly 70% shooting from the Beach.
The game turned at the start of the second half however, as the Beach opened on a 12-0 run and pushed their lead to 18 points at 77-59 on a layup from Scott. A Rotegaard 3-pointer gave Long Beach State their largest lead at 21 points with just under 11 minutes to play, and despite having to continue to rotate heavily with the shortened bench, cruised to the 103-87 win.
LBSU's 16 3-pointers were one off of the program's single-game record, and the Beach hit 100 points in a game for the second time this season.
The Beach remains on top of the Big West standings, and will play a critical game on Saturday at UC Irvine in the Black and Blue Rivalry. Tipoff is at 9 p.m. PT, as the game will be featured on national television on ESPNU.
