No. 6 Dirtbags Set for Home Opener Series against Sacramento State

Long Beach State will play their first games of the season at Bohl Diamond at Blair Field.

LONG BEACH, Calif. – After a huge series win on opening weekend, the No. 6 ranked Dirtbags welcome Sacramento State to Bohl Diamond at Blair Field for a three-game set.

LAST TIME OUT
•   The Dirtbags caught the eyes of a lot of people all over the country on opening weekend, going into Starkville and taking two of three from the reigning national champion Mississippi State Bulldogs.
•   Long Beach State came out on the right end of a pitchers' duel in game one as Luis Ramirez tossed six hitless innings with Matt Fields and Devereaux Harrison finishing things out for a one-hit shutout.
•   Game two was all Dirtbags thanks to an offensive explosion. The team put up 13 runs on 14 hits to blow Mississippi State, 13-3. Jonathon Long led the way with a perfect 4-for-4, two home run performance.
•           LBSU could not complete the sweep on Sunday though as Mississippi State's offense figured things out putting up 12 runs on the 'Bags and salvage a win in the series.

•   After the first weekend of the season, the Dirtbags find themselves as a consensus top 15 team in all the major publications.

•   The biggest jump comes in the Baseball America poll where they went from unranked to the no. 6 team in the nation. That marks the highest rank for the Dirtbags since May 10, 2004 when they ranked fourth in the nation.
 
PRESEASON FAVORITES
•   The Big West Conference announced the results of the preseason coaches' poll on Monday and the 'Bags were tabbed as the favorites in the league. They received 7 first-place votes and 97 total points.
•   It marks the first time Long Beach State has been voted as the favorites since the 2008 preseason poll when they topped rival Cal State Fullerton by three points.
•   UC Irvine (3 first place votes, 92 points) and UC Santa Barbara (1 first place votes, 81 points) also received first place votes and round out the top three in the poll.
 
AGAINST THE OPPONENT
•   The weekend series against Sacramento State marks the 34th, 35th, and 36th games between the two programs with the most recent being in 2002.
•   Long Beach State leads the all-time series 24-9 overall and 10-6 at home. The last series between the Dirtbags and Hornets was the end of March in 2002 when  the 'Bags swept SAC on the road.

HOME OPENERS
•   Since 1954, when Long Beach State baseball first began, the team is 46-21-1 in their first home game of the season. In that span, they have also only been shut out twice.
•           In the Dirtbag era, since 1989, the team owns a 24-9 record and have won five of their last seven home openers. For the whole home opening series, the 'Bags are 16-8 in that same time span.
