Long Beach State fell 1-0 in their home opener in 10 innings.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – The No. 6 ranked Dirtbags (2-2) fell in their home opener against Sacramento State (5-0) by the score of 1-0 in 10 innings. The lone run of the ballgame came on a solo home run in the top of the tenth.
Luis Ramirez was absolutely phenomenal on the mound once again in front of a sold out crowd of 3,013 at Bohl Diamond at Blair Field. The sophomore right-hander tossed seven innings of shutout ball, scattering six hits while striking out seven. The reigning Big West Pitcher of the Week made a strong case to repeat as he has begun his 2022 season with 13 scoreless innings and microscopic 0.62 WHIP.
On the other side, Sacramento State's Eli Saul was just as good though, tossing 7.2 innings and surrendering just four hits and a walk while striking out 9.
Matt Fields and Ethan Clough were great out of the bullpen once again. Fields came on in the eighth and picked up a pair of strikeouts in a scoreless frame while Clough tossed a shutout ninth with a big punch out to escape a second and third jam.
Offensively the Dirtbags were held to just five hits, led by Chase Luttrell's 2-for-4 night. Sebastian Murillo, Jesse Lopez, and Kaden Moeller all recorded hits in the loss.
The big hit came off the bat of Cesar Valero, who sent Dalton Ponce's first of the tenth inning over the wall in left-center. Jack Zalasky closed out the game in the bottom half of the tenth handing Long Beach State their second loss of the season.
The Dirtbags will look to bounce back against Sacramento State tomorrow. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. at Bohl Diamond at Blair Field.
