A six-run fourth inning sank the LBSU chances against the hosts.
TUCSON, Ariz. – Long Beach State cut the Arizona lead to one in the third inning on an RBI double from freshman Corissa Sweet, but the No. 9 Wildcats answered with three runs in the bottom half and a six-run fourth inning to close out Long Beach State's time in Tucson with a 12-2 defeat.
Arizona (7-2) took an early lead with a two-run home run from Allie Skaggs in the bottom of the first inning, but Long Beach State (2-7) chipped away at the lead immediately.
Senior Kyra Snyder continued her strong start to the season with a two-out single, advancing to second on an error, and then scored on a single from freshman Marissa Caballero to make the score 2-1. Arizona pushed around an unearned run in the bottom of the second, but the Beach pulled back within one once more.
Freshman Jacquelyn Bickar singled to start the third inning, and Sweet, coming in as a pinch hitter, doubled into the gap in left center to cut into the Arizona lead.
An awfully-timed error let the Wildcats get some breathing room in the fourth as three unearned runs came around to score in the frame, and then Arizona broke the game open in the fourth, with the big hits coming on a two-run single from Izzy Pacho and a two-run home run from Sophia Carroll.
Long Beach State will continue tournament play next weekend at one of the nation's premier tournaments, the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic held in Cathedral City, Calif. The Beach opens their action in the desert on Friday, February 25 against No. 1 Oklahoma at 3 p.m. on FloSoftball.
