LONG BEACH, Calif. –
The Long Beach State Women's Basketball team held a nine-point lead at halftime, but a second half surge from Hawaii dropped the Beach, 72-64, on Saturday at the Walter Pyramid.

The Beach (16-4, 9-3 Big West) shot 34.5-percent from the field, while the Rainbow Wahine (12-8, 8-2 Big West) connected on 26-of-56 field goals for a 46.4 field goal percentage. The Bows also shot 44.4-percent from long distance and out-rebounded Long Beach State 47-29.

The bright spot of the night was senior forward Maddi Utti's double-double as she tallied a season-high 25 points, while adding 12 boards, two assists, two steals, and one block.

Joining Utti in double-figures was junior guard Justina King who finished the contest with 15 points, while adding four assists, two steals, one rebound, and one block.

Ma'Qhi Berry led the Beach with five assists, while also contributing six points, two blocks, and a rebound in the setback.

The Bows opened the game with an early three, but the Beach were quick to respond using a 6-0 run to take an 8-5 lead. Long Beach State extended its lead 16-12 after a jumper from Utti at 1:47, and ended up leading 17-16 at the end of the frame.

The second quarter saw the Beach struggle early on as they were held scoreless for more than three and a half minutes. During that time, Hawaii took a 23-21 lead. Utti would end the scoring drought for the Beach with a three at 5:54 to give LBSU a 24-23 edge. That three sparked a 13-0 run as Long Beach State opened up a double-digit lead, 37-25, before holding a nine-point advantage (39-30) at halftime.

Long Beach State led by as many as 13 on two occasions in the second half as Utti drained a three at 7:05 to notch her fifth 20-point game of the season and give LBSU a 46-33 lead. Hawaii would not quit as the Bows chipped away and used a 9-0 run to take a 49-48 edge heading into the fourth quarter.

Hawaii continued its scoring run into the fourth quarter and took a 52-48 lead. Despite Hawaii's run, Long Beach State did not quit. The Beach managed to regain the lead, 57-55, on a jumper by King with 6:30 remaining. The conference foes battled each other back and forth and another trey from King evened the score at 64-all with 2:10 left. From there, Hawaii closed out the game on an 8-0 run to win, 72-64.

Amy Atwell led the way for the Bows with 25 points and 12 rebounds. Olivia Davies added 17 points, seven boards, two blocks, and one assist. Daejah Phillips dished out five assists to go along with four points, six boards, and one steal.

Long Beach State looks to get back on the winning track when the Beach host CSUN on Thursday, Feb. 17 at 7 p.m. at the Walter Pyramid. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
