Beach Women’s Basketball Rolls Past La Sierra in Home Opener

Malia Bambrick and Savannah Tucker lead the Long Beach State offense in dominant win

LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State opened the game on a 9-0 run and never looked back as the Beach downed La Sierra, 79-34, in the team's home opener on Saturday night at the Walter Pyramid.
The Beach (1-1) shot 45.6-percent from the field, while the Golden Eagles (0-3) shot 29.2-percent from the floor in a contest that saw Long Beach State dominate in almost every statistical category. LBSU outrebounded La Sierra, 41-27, and held the lead on assists a whopping 26-3, while swiping 20 steals to La Sierra's six. The Beach also led the Golden Eagles with four blocks to one.
Senior guard Malia Bambrick was on fire from the start as she kicked off the game with a three and went on to finish the contest with 21 points shooting 44.4-percent from the field. The Santa Clarita, Calif., native was hot from long distance as five of her eight made field goals came from behind the arc as she shot 45.5-percent from three. Additionally, she added four rebounds, three assists, and one steal in an all-around solid performance.
Bambrick's hot shooting contributed to six of LBSU's nine points to start the game. Senior guard Tori Harris also drained a three in that run as the Beach took a quick 9-0 advantage over La Sierra within the first two and a half minutes of the game. From there, Long Beach State extended its lead to 16 (23-7) at the end of the first quarter.
La Sierra scored 12 points on 38.5-percent shooting in the second quarter, but Long Beach State's early lead was too much for the Golden Eagles to overcome. The Beach scored 14 points in the second frame on 35.3-percent shooting and held a 37-19 lead at halftime.
Long Beach State came out of the locker room at halftime and turned in an excellent third quarter performance. The Beach connected on 11-of-21 field goals to shoot 52.4-percent from the field as they racked up 30 points in the quarter, tying for the second most points Long Beach State has scored in a single quarter since moving to the quarter system in 2015-16. Bambrick, Harris, and Courtney Murphy each scored five points in the frame to lead Long Beach State, while the defense shutdown La Sierra limiting the Golden Eagles to just four points, off of one field goal and two made free throws, in the quarter as LBSU took a convincing, 67-23, advantage into the final quarter.
With all of their starters out, Long Beach State still had a solid fourth quarter as they out-shot La Sierra 45.5-percent to 38.5-percent and outscored the Golden Eagles, 12-11, en route to winning, 79-34.
Joining Bambrick in double-figures were sophomore guard Savannah Tucker (16 points), redshirt junior guard Kianna Hamilton-Fisher (13 points), and Harris (11 points). Tucker was perfect from the field as she connected of 7-of-7 field goals, with two made threes. Hamilton-Fisher added three assists, two boards, and one steal in the game, while Harris finished the contest with six rebounds, three assists, and two steals.
Leading Long Beach in rebounding was junior guard Kristyna Jeskeova who grabbed eight boards to go along with two steals, and one assist. Murphy, a senior guard, came off the bench and added seven rebounds to go along with two assists, and two steals.
Redshirt senior guard Ma'Qhi Berry dished out a team-best six assists, while adding four points, three steals, and two rebounds. Sophomore guard Patricia Chung came off the bench and made a difference collecting five assists, a team-leading four steals, and two rebounds.
La Sierra was led by Sydney Wallner's 12 points and three assists, while Luiza Rodrigues and Kaylee Martinez added eight and seven rebounds, respectively. Rodrigues also added three steals, while Sara Weber grabbed two. However, Rodrigues and Weber also contributed to a combined 12 turnovers on the night.
Long Beach State hits the road for a three-game road swing as their first stop is Tucson, Ariz., to take on No. 19 Arizona on Sunday, Nov. 20 at 2 p.m.
