Women’s Soccer Kicks Off 2022-23 Black and Blue Rivalry at UCI on Sunday

The Beach will head to UC Irvine in a battle of the unbeatens on Sunday.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State will play the first installment of the 2022-23 Black and Blue Rivalry as they head to UC Irvine on Sunday. It will be a battle of the unbeatens as the Beach (3-0-1) and Anteaters (1-0-4) are the only two teams in the league who have yet to suffer a loss in Big West play.

ABOUT LAST WEEK
• Long Beach State posted a perfect six point week last week with a 2-1 victory against Fullerton and a 2-0 shutout win at Hawaii. The two wins also extended their win streak to three straight and their unbeaten streak to four straight.
• Against the Titans, Sophie Jones scored the first goal of her career with a header in the 11th minute and Lena Silano notched her ninth goal of the season with a PK in the 34th. While Fullerton ended the shutout in the 73rd, the Beach held on for rivarly win.
• In their second match of the weekend, LBSU traveled to Hawai'i and handed the Rainbow Wahine their first home loss of the year in shutout fashion. Zora Standifer was tremendous in goal, totaling seven saves on the way to her second shutout in the last three matches.
CONFERENCE AND NATIONAL STAT RANKINGS
• The Beach has moved into the top spot, not only in the standings, but with the most points, goals, and assists in the Big West. Their 1.75 assists per game is 59th in the NCAA and their 21 total assists is 67th. They also rank among the top 100 in points per game, total points, scoring offense, and total goals.
• Lena Silano leads the Big West in goals and total points, while ranking second in shots and shots on goal. Her nine goals this season and 0.70 goals per game both rank 16th in the NCAA. She also ranks 16th in total points and 18th in points per game.
SCHEDULING TOUGH
• Head Coach Mauricio Ingrassia is known for setting up a high quality schedule against some of the best teams in the country. That is no different for 2022 as WoSoIndependent.com had Long Beach State with a top ten toughest schedule in the nation prior to the season.
• The Beach faced three ranked teams with USC, Harvard, and Pepperdine in their non-conference schedule. While they were not ranked when the Beach faced them, week two opponent Washington has also entered the Top 25.
ALTERING THE RECORD BOOKS
• Overall the last two seasons, senior Lena Silano has etched her name all over the Long Beach State record books and continues to change them as the season goes.
• In single-season history, her 2021 campaign ranks second for game-winners, third for shots,fifth for goals, and seventh for total points. With six more games in the regular season, she already sits in a tie for tenth again in single-season goals while knocking on the door for points and game-winners again.
• For her career, she is fifth in game-winners, seventh all-time in shots, eighth in goals scored, and tenth in total points.
BIG WEST PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
• For the second time this season, the Beach claimed two of the three Big West weekly honors after winning both matches last week.
• Lena Silano was named Offensive Player of the Week with two goals and an assist last week. Against Fullerton, she assisted on the team's first goal before delivering a successful game-winning PK. Her second goal of the week came on a header in transition off a perfect cross in from Cherrie Cox.
• Zora Standifer garnered her first career Big West Defensive Player of the Week leading the defensive effort on a perfect 2-0 week. She totaled eight saves, including seven in the shutout victory over Hawaii.
THE SILANO SHOW
• Lena Silano continues to lead the Beach this season. She owns nine goals and 21 points to lead the team and rank among the tops in the conference. Her three assists also ranks tied for fourth most in the league.
• The senior has notched at least one point in nine of the twelve matches this year and is currently riding her second four-match point streak of the season. The first was from Aug. 25 to Sep. 4 and now she owns at least one point in each of the first four Big West contests.
• She is currently the active Big West career leader in points, goals, goals per game, and shots while also ranking among the leaders in shots shots per game, points per game, and total assists.
ACE-HIGH
• Elysia Laramie was a 2019 All-Big West First Team selection and the leading scorer for the Beach that season. Unfortunately, an injury and COVID kept her off the field in both 2020 and 2021, but she has slotted into the backline like she never left this season.
• This year, she has played all but five minutes through 12 matches primarily as the center back, but has also spent time up front on offense. Against CSU Bakersfield, she netted her first goal of the season leaping above everyone on the pitch for a header on a corner kick.
• The goal goes down as her fourth career game-winner which moves her into a tie for tenth most in program history.
SUMMER TIME AT THE BEACH
• Sophomore Summer Laskey started the season as a spark plug off the bench, but has now found herself in the starting lineup over the last several matches. In the midst of a breakout season, she is second on the team and tied for fourth in the Big West with four goals to go along with three assists for 11 total points.
• She is one of just four players in the conference with two multiple-point games recording her first career brace against Fresno State and then registering a goal and an assist against CSU Bakersfield last week.
THE CHERRIE ON TOP
• Freshman Cherrie Cox has made an immediate impact in her debut season at the Beach, playing at least 70 minutes in seven matches thus far and becoming a staple in the Starting XI through the start of conference play.
• She capped off the perfect week for the Beach with a goal and an assist at Hawai'i. She has now registered two goals and two assists this season, moving her into third on the team with six total points.
GET EVERYONE INVOLVED
• Last year, the Beach totaled 58 points (goals+assists) on the season and had just 10 different student-athletes record at least one point. This year, they have surpassed the player total with 12 different players registering a point after Aimee Medwin joined the club last week. They currently have eight different athletes that have registered a goal and 11 that have recorded an assist.
• Cox had the first multi-point effort of her career with a goal and an assist against Hawaii last week, giving the Beach four different players with at least one multi-point effort (Silano, Laskey, Cox, Ybarra). Silano (3) and Laskey (2) also make LBSU the only team to have two players with multiple.
SCOUTING THE ANTEATERS
• UC Irvine and the Beach are the final two unbeaten teams in conference play as the Anteaters enter the week with a 1-0-4 record in the Big West. They are 5-3-5 overall for the season.
• UCI has outscored their opponents 18-11 through 13 matches with their 0.85 goals against average leading the Big West. They also own a league leading six shutouts this year, all from goalkeeper Glo Hinojosa. The reigning GK of the Year ranks second in the conference with an .800 save percentage with a total of 44 saves.
• Offensively, they are averaging 13 shots per game with a 0.444 SOG percentage thus far. Individually, it's been Destinee Manzo and Desiree Mendoza leading the way with four goals each and owning ten points and nine points, respectively.
• Historically, the Beach trails the all-time series 10-14-6 and are 2-2-1 in the last five meetings. Last year, the Anteaters came out on top with a 1-0 overtime victory.
