The Beach battled back from an early deficit to force a tie and remain unbeaten in Big West play.
IRVINE, Calif. – A strong second half propelled the Beach into a 1-1 draw at UC Irvine on Sunday night. The 3-0-2 start to Big West play is the best for Long Beach State since the 2008 season and has them in sole possession of first place atop the conference standings.
UC Irvine controlled the first half, totaling 12 shots and took the lead in the 36th minute on an Erin Covey goal from just outside the top of the box. Meanwhile their defense held the Beach to just a single shot through the first 45 minutes.
Coming out of the break Long Beach State immediately shifted the momentum with three shots, two on goal, in the first six minutes of the half.
In the 66th minute, a Long Beach clear ended up in the possession of a wide-open Cherrie Cox just shy of the midfield line. The freshman dribbled into the UCI half, megged the Anteater defender with a pass to Lena Silano just outside the box, who then passed it back to Cox for the left-footed finish.
It is the third goal of the season for the Torrance native and gives her eight points for the season.
For Silano, the assist gives her a point in her fifth consecutive match as she has registered a goal or an assist in every Big West match thus far. It also moves her into a tie for ninth most career points in program history.
The Beach had a few great looks down the stretch with a player advantage after UCI received a red card in the 83rd. Both strikes came off the foot of Lena Silano as her first shot in the final five minutes was saved by the Irvine keeper while her second was a beautiful strike from 30 yards out, missing just wide left.
In total, the Beach registered eight shots after outshooting the Anteaters seven-to-five in the second half on their way to the 1-1 draw.
Zora Standifer was fantastic in goal once again for LBSU with four saves on the night. She now owns 23 saves and a 0.91 goals against average which would rank second in the conference.
Long Beach State will be back in action on Thursday as they head to UC San Diego for a matchup with the Tritons before hosting CSUN on Sunday.
