LONG BEACH, Calif. –
The Long Beach State Women's Basketball team won its third straight game in a defensively charged 56-46 win over UC Riverside on Thursday night at the Walter Pyramid.

The Beach continue to roll in Big West action as they improve to 6-1 in the conference and are 13-2 overall. Meanwhile, the Highlanders drop to 5-7 on the year and 2-3 in league play.

LBSU jumped out in front early as the Beach kicked off the game on a 10-0 run and never looked back. Long Beach State led the entire contest as they shot 42.9-percent from the field and dominated points in the paint 42-14. However, UCR chipped away and pulled within four in the third quarter, but the Beach's defense continued to hold strong as LBSU came away with the win.

"It was a gutsy win tonight," Long Beach State Head Coach Jeff Cammon said. "It wasn't pretty, but we figured it out. Again, our defense carried us and I'd say that's our identify and that's what we hang our hat on, but there's a lot of room to grow on the offensive end."

The Beach led by as many as 16 points (27-11) in the game and held an 11-point (30-19) advantage going into halftime.

UC Riverside started the second half with five-straight points to cut the Beach's lead down to six (30-24), but Long Beach State charged back out in front. The Highlanders whittled away at LBSU and managed to come within four (33-29) with 2:37 remaining in the third, but Long Beach held a five point edge (37-32) at the end of the frame.

In the fourth quarter, Long Beach State extended its lead back up to 10 (44-34) as the Beach went on a 7-0 run jumpstarted by Maddi Utti's layup off of a UCR turnover. From there, the Beach cruised as they pushed their lead up to as many as 14 in the quarter, before winning, 56-46.

Utti led all scorers with 16 points, marking her ninth double-figure performance of the season, while Jasmine Hardy added 12 points, and Kianna Hamilton-Fisher came off the bench and scored nine.

In addition to leading the squad in scoring, Utti also led the team in rebounding with six boards to go along with three assists and two steals.

Justina King dished out six assists, while Ma'Qhi Berry added five for the Beach.

Defensively, Savannah Tucker came into the game and collected three steals, while Hamilton-Fisher and Utti added two.

The Highlanders were led by Keilanei Cooper's 13 points and Jada Holland's 11. Matehya Bryant added eight boards and four points, while Daphne Gnago concluded the game with nine points and four rebounds.

Long Beach State will be back in action on Saturday, January 29 at 2 p.m. when they host UC Davis at the Walter Pyramid. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
